Markus's POV
It had been almost a year since Malachi had come into our lives. To absolutely no one's surprise, Melody and Malachi had bonded quickly, and now it was rare to ever see one without the other. Every spare moment Melody had that wasn't spent with me, was spent with Malachi, cuddling in either our bed or on the couch, watching a children's film. And on more than one occasion I had accused her of using him to relive her childhood, a fact she sarcastically denied. As time went on, the three of us developed the classic happy family of three lifestyle.
And here we were, a year later, in our backyard having a small get together. Melody called it a barbecue, but as only she and Hank had to eat, it was really more of a family gathering. Melody and I watched as Malachi played with Alice, trying to seem flirt and failing epically.
"Clearly, he gets that from you," Melody scoffed.
"What do you mean? I'm excellent at flirting."
"No. You're not. You think you are, but you're not," She told me, deadpanning.
"Like you're any better," I said, defensively.
"I am a lot smoother than that," She answered and North agreed.
"Simon, the girls are ganging up on me again," I whined and he laughed at me.
"I dunno what you want me to do."
"Josh?" I asked, looking for backup.
"You want me to take on the power twins? Have you lost your mind?" He asked and I sighed, defeated.
"I remember when the two of you were in a fistfight. Can't we go back to that? It was a simpler time," I said, looking at my wife and her best friend.
"You mean when North had feelings for you, you rejected her and she tried to kill me? Sure, Markus. It was so simple," Melody rolled her eyes and North snorted.
"It's so cute how they play together," Kara said as she and Luther came up to our group.
"My son is flirting with your daughter, horribly might I add, and if I wasn't so disappointed in him I'd put an end to it," Melody said, causing North and Simon to laugh, and Kara to crack a smile.
"So you noticed it too?"
"It's painfully obvious. And Alice is having none of it."
"Clearly," Luther said, watching the two child models.
"Melody, your kid is borderline harassing that little girl. Solve the problem," Hank huffed, coming over to join us, Connor following.
"It's not that bad, Hank," Conner deflected and Melody sighed.
"Malachi! No means no!" She called and he hung his head. "Solved the problem," She said and he looked shocked.
"How'd you do that?"
"Nobody fucks with a Queen. Not even her little boy," Melody smirked. As the hours passed, so did the jokes and laughs; everyone becoming just that little bit closer. I couldn't help but feel like Carl would be proud of me, and Melody and everything we had accomplished. We had managed to get Androids almost all the same rights Humans had with little resistance, Melody had fully made it so Transmonia ran itself, only needing Casey as a figurehead which she was more than happy to do, and we were connecting with a little boy who had started coming out of his shell, and exploring life. We had discussed getting CyberLife to create a teenage body for Malachi to inhabit when he was ready, as was a new law created so Android children could grow up at their own pace. But he was happy staying in his original body, and I knew Melody was happy with that decision as it made him easier to snuggle with.
I sighed, thinking back on everything that's happened in the past two years, how everything seemed to change and yet everything seemed to be going so well. My people were free, my wife and child were happy, loved and taken care of, my wife had excelled in her position as Queen and all and all, everything just seemed perfect. Of course, there was still some resistance from Humans, who still believed that Androids were slaves, and sometimes they got violent but for the most part, Humans had begun to accept us. And the Humans that got violent towards Androids were punished as if they had gotten violent towards another Human. Sure, the system wasn't perfect, but it was a work in progress, and I couldn't be happier with how things were turning out.
"Babe?" Melody asked, her voice low enough so only I would hear it. She wrapped her arms around my waist and rested her chin on my shoulder.
"Hm?" I acknowledged her.
"Why the serious face?"
"I'm just thinking of everything that's happened in the past two years. Since I met you, everything has changed. Most of it for the better, so I guess I should thank you."
"You don't really think this all happened because I defended you from some assholes, do you? Markus, I'm pretty sure all of this would have happened without me. You are completely capable of this kind of change without my help," She said, holding me just a bit tighter.
"Maybe, but then who would have called me Captain P. Tom?" I asked and she laughed.
"Fair enough. But you were totally checking out my ass."
"You checked mine out too," I pointed out.
"Yes, and I still stand by it's creepy when a guy does it, but not when a girl does it."
"And I still stand by that it's a double standard," I smiled.
"Oh totally. But it's like the only one that works in favor of women, so it's ok."
"That's not how it works, babe," I laughed.
"I'm a Queen, I can make it so that's how it works," She said sticking her tongue out at me.
"Hey, Melody?"
"Yes, Markus?
"I love you. You know that right? I love you, your sarcasm, your dirty jokes. I love our little family and our much larger family. I love that we can be quiet and intimate one minute and loud and cracking jokes the next. I love my life with you, and I never want it to end," I confessed.
"Markus, even after we're gone, what we have will never end. What you have created is one Hell of a legacy, and that little boy over there is a part of it while being his own legacy. The legacy that is ours. You have your Android rebellion legacy, I have my Monarch legacy, but together we have that little boy. And I have no doubt that after our bodies have broken down so unfixably, he is going to continue both of our legacies into his own. Because what we have created is going to last until the end of time. Of that, I have no doubt."
"I... don't know what to say to that..."
"Oh, and Markus?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you too." And in that moment, I knew that while the same events might have taken place without her, my life would never be the same without my Songbird. Because while everyone saw me as the Androids savior, in reality, she was mine. And I wouldn't trade that for anything.
