Chapter 31

Footprints

I winced with each silent footstep I took. My feet padding slowly down the carpetted steps.

My heart was pounding hard against my rib cage, loud in my ears that I was afraid who ever, what ever was downstairs could hear it.

I swallowed, my mouth was so dry, it tasted of parchment. My tongue a heavy lump in my mouth.

My heart stopped, as the step creaked. I stopped in my tracks, my breath hitching in my throat.

My head, for once was completly empty. One simple thought was all that couldn't settle in my mind. What the heck was happening?

My feet went down another step.

Something clattered across something hard. The floor.

Hearing the sound a shot of adrenaline zipped through my veins, it was now or never. I shot down the last step and ran to the other side of the hallway.

I took advantage of those last few seconds of bravery, and bolted towards where I know I can find the light switch.

I felt around the wall before feeling the switch under my fingers, and flicked it on.

A large sound came from behind me, and I whipped around, my neck cracking as I did.

Light alluminated the room.

Everything went dead quiet.

I scanned the front hallway, which I had come to. I didn't see a whisp of black fabric swooshing through the air as he ran to hide, or a gun to my forhead. Or even a shadow casting across the wood.

My heart skipped a beat, expecting at any moment for a click of a gun trigger or a flick of a knife.

No sound came.

Ha! It was hilarious how overworked I had gotten over a silly noise! It was probably just a meighbor upstairs. I smiled wryly to myself at my foolishness.

I was suddenly freezing, wind blowing across me. I crossed my arms together, and clentched my teeth at the unexpected draft.

I heard a whoosh noise. I furrowed my eyebrows. The wind lifted my hair lightly on my shoulders.

I clocked my head to the side, approaching the coolness. Did Liz put a fan out in the entry way before she left?

I padded down the hall way, an eerie auroa made me shiver.

I let out a gasp.

The door was wide open.

I walked slowly towards the door.

I looked out into the hallway of my aparentement, shivering. The hallway was cold, the lobby was always stiffling warm so they opened all the windows making it cold out here at night.

I was positive that I had closed the door before I went to sleep. And had locked it.

I put my hand on the door handle, my heart was racing.

I felt indents under my palm, I gasped.

I crouched down to examine it. And sure enough, in the metal were scratch marks.

Somebody had picked the lock.

My jaw fell open, shock. Confusion. Fear.

The mint green walls of the hallway started spinning, the floor coming closer towards me.

I walked back into the room, my body in total shock, stiffened.

My gaze drifted towards the ground. I stopped in my tracks.
