Chapter 36
Under the Rock
I bit into a slice of toast, my teeth sinking into the crisp bread and melting through the melting butter, as I sat at the cute little outdoor table outside the quaint hotel restaurant. I ate my breakfast quietly next to Evan and Mark as they squabbled.
I turned out their arguement, as I usually did into a quiet hum in the back round. I stared off into the beautiful bright sky, my Raybans shielding my eyes from the harmfully bright sunshine. I stretched my bare legs out into the rays of sun, soaking up the sun eagerly.
But suddenly, as I was deep in relaxed thought, a strange realization touched my mind.
Quickly, it became an urgent matter.
We have been living, in this crazy underwater life for around a week now. It startled me, how we have been so out of the loop and so... So sheltered! Nothing had happened! Absoloutly nothing!
We ran away from this trouble, laying low. Totally unconnected.
How have I been so caught up in 'this', whatever 'this' is to realise that!
It was a good thing, to an extent. If we became too comfortable living this sheltered life, then what would happen if something happened? Would we run away again?
I squeezed my eyes shut. No. This was stupid. Everything is fine, things will go back to normal.
But something, tried to argue against my ration.
What happens when school starts? I can't be living under this rock for much longer. I wouldn't be able to stand it.
Calm down Sophie, I told myself again. You're overreacting.
I decided to compromise with myself. I would plan something with my girls tonight.
Immediatly, I dialed up Evelyn, the party girl who could definitly help me and cheer me up.
She picked up on the second ring.
"Hello?" Her high pitched voice said sweetly.
"Hey Ev." I smiled into the line. It was good to hear her voice. "I think us and the girls should hang tonight, I really need to be hang out with you guys again."
"Yeah! Definitly! My house, at 5. I don't think Gracie can come, she had volleyball I think. Try her anyways, and oh invite Liz and Katelyn, I'll get the rest." Evelyn chirped, planing it all out.
"Alright, I'll be there! Later, hun."
I hung up my phone, slipping it into the waist of my denim shorts.
I noticed the paranormal silence surrounding me. I turned my head away to face the boys.
Mark and Evan had stopped argueing, both looking at me confused.
"What's going on?" Mark questioned, gesturing with his chin to the phone in my waist band.
"Oh, I'm staying the night at Evs with some friends." I smiled, waving my fingers at him. "You guys can have the room to yourselves tonight. "
"Whoop!" Mark exclaimed in a deep, booming voice. He stood up abruptly in his chair, pounding his chest, ape like. "Guys night!"
"Aww..." Evan whined, ignoring Mark and crossing his arms over his chest and pulling a pout, like a sad toddler. "No Sophie tonight?" He asked in a sad, squeaky voice.
I patted his head sadly.
"Dude!" Mark scoffed, looking shocked. He facepalmed himself, crashing back down into his chair, spreading himself out. "You're whipped!"
