Chapter 39

Tired of Surprises.

When I saw Evan's big black truck pull into the gravely driveway the next morning, I immediately started to panic.

"Guys, Evan is here. What to do I say to him?" I asked, panic rising in my chest. The remaining two girls, Evelyn, Payton both stopped their conversation, and turned to look at me with raised eyebrows.

The rest of the girls had gone home, for they could drive themselves. Payton and I, were waiting for a pick up.

"I wouldn't want to tell him what happened right now," Evelyn said, biting her lip. "But you are going to have to talk to him about it later."

I nodded, only half listening to her advice. I was staring out the window, focused on the black truck.

I snapped my attention back to the girls, wrapping my hands around the half-finished mug of hot chocolate. My hands quickly absorbed the warmth radiating off the white china mug. I leaned back and drained the remaining contents. Never leave a hot-chocolate un-finished.

"Thanks you guys, for everything." I smiled to them, pushing my chair away from the table and standing up. I pushed my chair in politely clamping my hands down firmly to prevent them from shaking.

I turned away to run downstairs and grabbed my bag. I heard scraping of chairs behind me.

I turned around, swinging my bag over my shoulder. I stopped suddenly in my tracks. Both girls were watching me, standing in the hall way in front of the stairs.

They both had matching expressions, with crossed arms, quirked eyebrows and concern laced in their eyes.

"Are you sure that you're okay?" Evelyn asked, reaching out to place a small hand on my shoulder. I nodded, casting my gaze downwards to look at my socks again. My fuzzy, purple socks. I wiggled my toes.

"I'll be okay." I whispered softly, closing my eyes delicately.

I felt to figures wrap their arms around me. Instinctively, I returned the hug. My heart clenched once more. A single tear slipped out of my closed eye. Using my sleeve, I whipped it away.

Payton met my eyes over Evelyn's shoulder. Her eyes spoke with out having to speak a single word. She was asking me, if I was sure.

I nodded, breaking the eyes contact so I wouldn't have to face her unconvinced look.

"Okay, thanks guys." I smiled sadly, drawing apart.

Evelyn and Payton untangled themselves from the mass of arms. I met both their eyes, thanking them both silently.

"Wish me luck." I muttered quietly, hitching my bag again and walking past the girls.

"Good luck!" I heard their voices intertwined as I headed down the hallway.

I stepped outside, the sun hitting my body with a warm greeting. I tried to make myself look natural and happy, restraining my stressed feeling.

I knew that Evan could see me. I tried to erase all evidence of last night from my features.

I waved to Evan and Mark, walking closer to the truck. They waved back, their faces both were split into wide grins.

The closer I came to them, the more nervous I became.

I opened the backseat door, and swung myself in.

"Hey boys." I said cheerfully, grinning at them. I winced at my tone, which came out a little too high pitched.
