Chapter 44
Sweet Nothing
I was nervous, as the phone rang shrilly in my ear. I wasn't sure if he'd even pick up. But the need to call him was so big, I put aside my doubts and dialed the number. I prayed he'd answer, and listen.
The strong feeling that pushed from my chest was still big, making me more confident and sure, and a double threat. I'm not sure who to, Ryan or my mother.
"Hello?" An familiar voice interrupted my thoughts.
"Oh Evan, I've missed you." I sighed, feeling a twinge of sadness and guilt take my unstable confidence down a peg.
"Oh, hi Sophie." Evan replied, quietly.
I felt the tension, the only time he calls me Sophie is when there's something happening.
"Evan, listen. I'm so sorry about that, you see, I was afraid. Afraid of my own mother and afraid of my own feelings. Do you know why, I had to do that? Well, Ryan is the son of a massive co-operation, and my mother wants to do a huge buissness deal with them. They were very worried and mad at me for breaking Ryan's heart. That reflects bad on my parents, so they refused the offer. My own mother threatened to stop everything, the money, she threatened that she would make sure that I never got a job or a house, and that I would always be miserable. And that she would do the same for you and Adam." I paused, taking a breath. My words spilling out from my mouth with no control.
"I had to go, she said, to make Ryan happy again, and the only way I could do that was to go on a date with him. So I met him, at a park, trying to reason with him... But obviously, he couldn't. So we went on a date, and I was so confused about how I was feeling..." I let the end of my sentence fall.
"But... When he kissed me... I felt..."
"Nothing." I finished. "Damn, sweet nothing. And I am so happy about that. He dosen't make me feel the way that you do, Evan. I guess you're really the one."
I waited for Evan's answer, hoping that that was enough. I still wasn't finished though.
"Soph..." He started, then falthered. "You see, I hate this girly shit. I forgive you. And I'm kinda happy that you don't enjoy that fuc-- freaking creep."
My heart raced, feeling so much more lighter and happier.
"Yeah, me too." I whispered, an warm feeling of happiness spreading through my chest.
Evan was just about to reply, when a great deal of muflfing and scratchyness overtook the phone, I kept listening, curiously. Muffled voices were heard. Evan and Mark's.
"Hello!" A chirpy voice was heard from the phone. "Who's this?"
I felt giddy, and happy. "Hi Mark-y Muffin." I giggled quietly.
There was a second of silence, Evan's protests were audiable in the backround. I could picture the wheels churning in Mark's head as he tried to make the connection.
"SOPHIE!!" He cried, the speaker engulfed in his cheers of joy. I laughed, almost astonished as he relentlessly ranted.
"I've missed you so much, you see, it's not the same here with out you. Evan's been really crabby and eats all the Orero's! Well, more then he usually does. And I never get one! Usually, all I get is one from the entire package but he won't even let me have one! And I think that he is emotionally attached to his phone..." Mark's voice toned down into a whisper. "He keeps staring at it."
I tried to smother my snicker, picturing Evan rolling his eyes at Mark's rant, which wasn't finished.
"And I miss yooooou! Evan isn't as nice as you, he dosne't let me sleep at the foot of the bed like a puppy! And remember when we used to skip down the long carpet hallways together really loudly? Well, Evan isn't good for that, because that's our thing." Mark paused for a split second for air, before continuing. I sat back in my chair to listen silently to Mark's windle. A smirk rested on my lips.
