Hannah stayed home the whole day on Sunday. She watched Netflix and ate all the food in the house.
Her aunt sat beside her in the beginning of her third movie, White Chicks.
"Hey, Ham," her aunt greeted her, using Hannah's ridiculous childhood nickname, "What's up? You've seemed...down lately."
Shaking her head, Hannah half-heartedly assured her aunt that she was fine.
Hannah's aunt, Mallory, was her favorite aunt. Mallory, or Aunt Mal, was always there to Hannah and she always understood her.
Aunt Mal frowned at Hannah. She nudged her elbow, making Hannah choke on her bite of neapolitan ice-cream.
"Woman!" Hannah spluttered, hacking up ice-cream.
Aunt Mal chuckled and draped her arm around Hannah's shoulder. "I love you, Ham. Now tell me what's wrong."
Hannah rolled her eyes and paused the movie. "How about what isn't wrong," she grumbled.
Mal looked at Hannah expectantly, so Hannah launched into her life struggles.
"There are two guys that I sorta like, I'm not sure, but it's like a crush. Like a really really REALLY bad crush. Okay so maybe I am sure, but I can't like them, you know? Like, one's the school's biggest bad boy and the other's the school's biggest sweetheart and I'm just there! I'm not worthy! The problem is that I think they both like me back. But they can't! And I can't fall for them!" Hannah burst and then gasped for a breath of air.
Aunt Mal processed everything, from what Hannah just said to her current facial expression (which was "on the brink of tears", by the way.) and began to laugh.
It was a loud and real laugh. The ones where you're forced to hunch over and clutch your stomach.
Hannah stared at her aunt, horrified. "How can you laugh?!" She cried out, "This is some serious problems I'm having here!"
Aunt Mal wiped her eyes, still laughing. "Hannah," she said, "you're in high school. There will be love problems."
"But I'm not ready for this!!!" Hannah groaned.
"Listen, Ham," Aunt Mal hugged Hannah close, "choose who you want, don't let others choose for you. If you're in love with one guy, great! I'll help you plan your wedding! But never EVER change for the dude, alright?" She paused and then laughed abruptly, "What if he falls in love with a fake version of yourself? Ouch."
Hannah shrugged her shoulders. She knew that her aunt was right.
"And all the bullcrap about 'makeup armor' and stuff I said to Sehun," Hannah thought, wincing, "It sounded right in my head..."
"A lot of things sound right in your head," Aunt Mal assured Hannah, which made her realize that she thought aloud, "but you still need to think your thoughts through before you turn them to actions."
Hannah nodded. Aunt Mal pecked Hannah's cheek and grabbed for the remote control.
"I wanna watch this. Pass the cookies!" Aunt Mal joked.
Hannah grinned and tossed her the cookie bag.
