Damian
This is a mistake
That's all I can keep telling myself as I drive past the coffee shop multiple times, working up the nerve too actually get out of the car.
I park in a spot out of view of the coffee shop, hoping that Naomi didn't see my car. I held onto my steering wheel, my knuckles turning white, my veins coming through.
Come on dude, get it together.
The rain dripped from the top of my hoodie into the coffee shop floor, making my presence known too an already peeved employee.
"Hey."
Naomi appeared before me, her hair that was once in a ponytail, now fell in front of her face. Her apron was discarded and so was her hat. Her smile was contagious and I couldn't help but smile myself.
"Hey, you ready to go," I ask, pulling up my hoodie more.
"Yep."
****
"You have a nice car," Naomi says, admiring my leather interior.
"Thanks," I mutter, peeking over at her while I keep my eyes on the road.
"No problem."
She was looking out the window, admiring the scenery of the turning leaves. I couldn't believe the seasons were already changing - the leaves were turning from green to orange hues.
"So I want to get too know you, Naomi," I say sincerely.
She turns her attention from the leaves to me, smiling ever so slightly, "What would you like too know?"
"Everything."
She scoffs, "That'll take some time if we're both being honest with ourselves."
"I'm down," I say matching her smile.
Naomi shifted in her seat, "Well, once I graduate I want to move far, far away."
"Why do you want too move far away?"
"I want a change in my life and college is my way out?"
I shake my head, "You can have a change now and not have to wait to move."
She shrugs, but then smiles, "Yeah, I know, but a change of atmosphere would be nice."
"Yeah, I get that."

"What is this place?"
Naomi and I stood outside of Mikeys', a diner which has been around since 1967, or at least that's what the sign says.
I scoff and place a hand over my heart, "You don't know Mikeys'? Oh man, you wound me."
Naomi shoves me playfully, "Shut up."
I laugh and follow her as we walk inside the diner. We were met with a neon red and yellow glow as we walked in, seeing how packed it was. The female employees wore those long skirts like they did in the 50's; Mikey did the best he could with keeping it fifties themed.
Naomi was taking in everything around her as I pulled her to a booth.
"Do you like it," I ask, watching for a reaction on her face.
She nods, "Yes, oh my gosh. This has to be one of the most coolest restaurant I've been too."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
In a short time after we sit down, a waitress comes up to our table.
"Welcome to Mikey's, what can I do for you guys today?" The waitress flicked her eyes back and forth between me and Naomi.
"I'm going to have the house specialty burger," I say. "Oh, and with a fries and a coke."
"I'll have the ten piece buffalo wings, with fries and a coke as well," Naomi orders after me, hanging the menu back to the waitress.
"Is that all for you all?"
I look at Naomi and she nods, "Yes, that's all."
Naomi smiles at the waitress as she walks away from our table.
I clear my throat, "Just to be clear, I'm paying."
The girl in front of me shakes her head, "I am perfectly capable of paying for myself and you."
"I never said you weren't, but it's my treat."
"Nah, it don't work like that."
"Well in this case it does," I reply quickly. "Here, if it makes you feel any better, you can pay next time."
"Alright, that's fair."
We fall into a temporary silence, neither of us knowing what too say now.
"So tell me about your girlfriend?"
My eyes that were once on the tv screen were now looking directly at Naomi. I have to admit, I was a little taken back by her question, but I did my best too hide my surprise.
"Well she's my ex now, clearly."
"Why, clearly," Naomi eyes me up and down.
"I tried to talk to her after my attempt, but she didn't even want too look at me."
Naomi remained silent.
"Lyla has told everyone too ignore me since then."
"Well that's a dick move on her part. She should've known how much you needed support."
I nod, "I guess, but I can see why she did it - I mean, I wouldn't want to be seen with the suicidal kid either."
"Do you still want too, you know, kill yourself?"
I give her a sad smile, "I think of a new way everyday."
***
After me and Naomi ate, she still battled too take the check, but I ultimately won in the end.
Naomi gave me detailed instructions on how to get to her house and soon we found ourselves parked in her driveway.
Naomi shifts in her seat too look at me and I match her.
"I had fun tonight," she says. "Thanks for taking me to a new place."
I smile, "Anytime."
"But," She says sternly. "The next time is on me."
"Yeah okay hopscotch, I'll see you later," I say laughing a little, surprising myself with the sound.
"Goodnight Damian."
"Goodnight Naomi."
And after that I couldn't help but think: would there be a next time?
