Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim.

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the Lord of the 'Alamîn . The Only Owner of the Day of Recompense. You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help. Guide us to the Straight Way. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace , not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray .

58: (Al-Mujadalah)- The Pleading

(The Disputing Woman)Section (juz')

Number of Verses: 22

The Chapter in question has twenty-two Verses and it was revealed in Medina. The blessed Chapter opens with a question of disputation hence the designation. The blessed Chapter treats of the law of zihar, a kind of divorce in pre-Islamic times; positive and negative aspects of whispering; greeting with those entering a meeting; distinction of the party of God and that of Satan.

Two traditions have been narrated from the Noble Prophet (S) and Imam Sadiq (as).

According to the former:

"One who recites Surah al-Hadid and Surah al-Mujadila and reflects and acts upon them, will be regarded as a member of the party of God."

The latter says:

"One who recites Surah al-Hadid and Surah al-Mujadila in their obligatory prayers will neither be afflicted with any torment in his life, nor will he or his family suffer from evil, nor will he be entangled with poverty and destitute."

The contextual meaning of these Chapters is clearly consistent with the said rewards indicating that the goal of reciting them is to apply them in one's life rather than mere recitation devoid of reflecting and acting upon them.

___

Benefits

There are 22 ayaat in this Surah and it was revealed in Madinah. The Holy Prophet (S) said that the one who recites this Surah will be from among the thankful servants of Allah (S.w.T.) on the Day of Judgement. If Surah al-Mujadilah is recited near a sick person, or worn by the sick person as a talisman, he will be cured of his illness. If recited on anything that has been buried in the ground, it will remain protected until the person himself removes it.

Reciting this Surah brings a feeling of ease to a restless person. Constant recitation also protects one from thieves. Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (a.s.) has said that recitation of this Surah keeps one safe from the evil designs of Jinn and men. If recited on dust or sand and then thrown towards the enemy, he is easily overcome.

Affirming a women's right

There was once a woman called Khawla. She had a husband who was old and particularly ill-tempered. One day in a moment of anger the man said, "You are to me like my mother's back"— a pagan form of divorce called "Zihar."

This divorce was particularly cruel. It deprived a woman of her marital rights, but also prevented her from remarrying. After he had spent time outside, he came back to try and get intimate with her again. She refused, saying that she would only allow him only after complaining to the messenger (peace be upon him) about it. Then she went to the prophet (peace be upon him) to complain.
