Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim.
In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the Lord of the 'Alamîn . The Only Owner of the Day of Recompense. You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help. Guide us to the Straight Way. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace , not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray .
____________70: (Al-Ma'arji)- The Ascending Stairways
(The Places of Ascent)Section (juz') 29Number of Verses: 44
Sura al-Maʿārij (Arabic: سورة المعارج) is seventieth surah of the quran. It is a makki sura located in juz twenty nine. "al-Ma'arij" means "degrees". This sura is called "al-ma'arij" because this word is mentioned in verse three of this sura. Sura al-Ma'arij begins with the story of someone who asked god to punish him. Then, it mentions the characteristics of resurrection and some of the characteristics of believers and the states of disbelievers and finally warns polytheists and disbelievers and speaks about Resurrection.
About the occasion of revelation of verses one to three of this sura, it is mentioned that these verses are about the event of ghadir and a person who did not accept the wilaya of imam ali(a). About the merits of recitation of this sura, it is narrated from the prophet (s) that whoever recites Sura al-Ma'arij, God will give him rewards of those who keep their trusts and promises and those who observe upon performing their daily prayers.
The blessed Chapter has forty-four Verses and is regarded as one of those revealed in Mecca, though some of the Verses were revealed in Medina. The designation of the Chapter, connoting the angels' places of ascent, derives from the third Verse. Similar to other Meccan Chapters, it mainly treats of Resurrection and warning to the polytheists and opponents.
It also deals with the states of the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection and the characteristics of the peoples of Paradise and Hell. The opening Verses of the Chapter concerns sending down torments in this world whereby one of the deniers of Imam 'Ali's (as) guardianship (wilaya) was afflicted and lost his life whose detailed account will be mentioned under the first Verse.
It is narrated from the Noble Prophet (S) that whoever recites the Sura Sa'ala Sa'il [namely, the chapter in question], God Almighty will grant him the Rewards of those who keep their covenants as well as those who are attentive toward the establishment of their ritual prayers.
In this vein, it is narrated from Imam Baqir (as) that whoever recites the Chapter constantly, he shall not be investigated on the Day of Resurrection regarding his sins, but he shall abide in Paradise beside Muhammad (S). The bestowal of such Rewards is dependent on fulfilling one's religious obligations.
