ch 25: Lunch with Bear

"Your body is fine now." the old gentleman remove his hands from our chest and back.

He used some kind of technique that is similar to the one the old pope use, where he send his mana through our body to examine us.

I look at our body. The bloody bruises covering the entirety of our body is gone. This doctor has done an amazing job bringing us back to life. I swear when that bastard Kanan smash us against the wall, blood spurts out of our mouth like fountains. We must've ruptured some organs. Yet here we are, already in perfect health in just a month.

I didn't even use magic to heal ourselves since at first, we were too weak to even talk, much less performing magic. By the time we recovered enough to use magic, I figured its no longer necessary. Better save every bit of mana we can in case history repeats itself.

"Well then, I won't be coming here anymore tomorrow. And I l hope I don't need to come here again." He said with a smile.

"Thank you." I said to him while Madam Najie dressed us up.

Madam Najie, the head maid, have been nursing us for the past month.

"Thank you." Emi swiftly followed my example.

The old man have a big smile on his face. He took out two piece of candy from his pocket and hand one to each of us. He have been using candy to get ou.. to get Emi's trust, so that he can treat us without any resistance from us.

"Farewell then." He said and left our room.

The doctor close the door behind him, but I can tell from the lack of footsteps that he stops in front of the door.

"She is back to full health now." The doctor spoke to someone who is waiting outside of our room.

"She should be fine. But watch over them. If you notice something different from them, do inform me. Their heads' injury were very serious after all." The doctor said in lower voice.

"All right. Thank you for you service."

It's Bear.

The door opened and he came in, accompanied by An and Jing. There's no sight of Kanan as usual. I haven't seen him ever since that day.

Emi hiss like a cornered animal at the sight of Bear. Her fear for stranger has become stronger after this incident. And even though we have been with them for months now, Bear is still a total stranger to us.

I cover ourselves with the blanket as Emi shift us away to the far side of the bed. We took the pillow and positioned it defensively in front of us.

They stare silently at us, but I can see Jing is barely able to contain his laughter.

"Najie, they will join me for lunch later. So bring them to the dining hall once I come back." Bear addressed Madam Najie in a haste before turning around and left.

Bear is wearing a thick black coat over his usual luxurious wear. Seems like he's heading out.

"You heard him. So today you have to take a bath no matter what." Madam Najie said with a soft smile.

"But it's cold..." Emi complained.

Madam Najie has always been nice to us, even before the incident with Kanan. And Emi already open up to her.

"Don't worry, I'll prepare a hot bath for you."

It's supposed to be nearing summer, and it's past noon already, yet the air outside is still chilly.

'Why hasn't he come back yet! We are starving here!'

We have been bathed by Madam Najie, and is waiting for Bear to return from wherever he went to for our lunch with him.

"Lea... I'm hungry..." Emi grumble.

"I know."

Usually, lunch is at noon, when the sun reach it's highest point. Almost an hour has passed for lunch time, but Bear isn't back yet.

Our window gave us a clear view of the front gate all the way to the massive castle in the distance. The castle is beautiful, but even that, and the huge planet floating just above the horizon becomes a boring, everyday thing once you've seen it for too much.

I shift my gaze to the street in front of the mansion. The street is bustling with people and their carriages, but Bear's carriage is nowhere to be seen.

"Click."

The door opened and Madam Najie walks in with a tray in her hands. Behind her Lina followed, carrying a smaller tray. They put the trays on the table.

The instance they remove the veils the delicious smell of hot stew invade my nostrils.

"Emilea, let's eat." Madam Najie gesture for us to come over.

I close the window and ran over to the table.

"But what about lunch with Bear?"

I ask that but Emi is already stuffing our belly with the stew.

"Call him Master!" Madam Najie hit my forehead lightly. "Eventhough he look like a bear, he's still our master."

"Don't worry. It's not that he want you girls to eat with him, he just want to talk with you. And you'd be starving if you wait for him." Madam Najie explain the reason.

True enough, the sun almost set when Bear finally came back.

"..."

We stare at each other in silence as Bear eat his meal and we play with out food.

It's hard to eat as the table is as high as our chin. Unlike the small table in our room, the table in the dining hall are made for adults.

I shift my eyes towards the man sitting next to Bear. After a little over a month, there he is, eating his meal by bear's side.

Kanan.

I stare dagger at him, but he's avoiding eye contact.

"scary..." Jing whisper to An while snickering.

I turn and glare at him, but only to amuse him even more. His snickering turns to muffled laughter. Even the always serious An is having trouble keeping his straight face.

"Clank"

Bear put down his utensils and a maid immediately clear the plate in front of him while another one serve him a drink.

I feel tension rising as everyone in the room wait for Bear to finish his drink.

"Emilea.." Bear open his mouth, producing a coarse voice.

"I want to address the incident from last month."

Bear pause and stare into my eyes. Emi avoided his gaze by staring at our feet. He then look at the rest one by one.

Gulp. I swallowed nothing in face of my nervousness.

He want to talk about Kanan hurting us, huh. is he going to apologize. Did he think an apology is enough. My thought muddled up as I feel anger welling up inside me.

"Last month, do you admit you were trying to escape?"

Haaaah?
