Winter comes and goes. The freezing temperature makes everyone holed up in their house. Doing whatever they can in the house. Weaving, knitting, making handicrafts or sharpening tools.

At night, we slept together, huddled closely to get past the worst of the cold. I'd like to burn more woods to heat the house. But even the woods are rationed so that it'll last through the winter.

Finally, after three months of grey sky, spring finally arrived. Snow melts and the temperature rose.

About time. I'm sick of eating dried meat and porridge.

With the arrival of spring comes the farm work, tilling the soil and planting the crops.

With winter over, Kabil can go hunting again, meaning fresh meat.

Spring, summer, autumn, winter.

Another boring year passed. Nothing happened. And we are still not allowed outside.

Halena almost never leave the house either, aside from when she fetch water from the well. Probably due to her health.

She does the housework diligently despite not in the best shape. And she try to show us the rope as much as she can.

"Your dad used to work as a mercenary before... " Mom entered her story mode as we sat on the bed.

She knows we are bored so whenever she have free time she'll tell stories or play with us.

I want to tell her to go get more rest. Go take a nap. You can see it on her pale face that she really need every extra rest she can get.

But seeing Emi's exited face whenever Halena tells a story, I don't have the heart to do that. At least not right away. I will still do it anyway, subtly.

"He was from a village far from here. But unfortunately, one day, his village was raided by a group of robbers. Dad's parents was killed during the ordeal." Halena said softly, emotionally.

Hey, what are you telling your five years old daughters? That's too dark.
But she got mine and Emi's full attention.

"When the state knight arrived, the robbers already got away. The young Kabil was filled with sadness and anger. He asked a knight to take him in as an apprentice. The knight agreed. So the eight years old dad trained under him for ten years before joining a mercenary group, trying to hunt down his parents' killer.
After spending three years wandering with the mercenaries while looking for the robbers, your dad finally found them!" Halena exclaimed.

"Where?" Emi asked.

"A group of bad guys were make their base at White Sand village. And the robbers were also there." Halena answered.

"The White Sand village are about seven days of walking north from our village. After getting that info, Kabil says goodbye to his comrades and left the mercenary group."

"Why?" I interrupted.

Won't it be easier if he asked for their help? I thought.

"The thing is, the bad guys numbers into a few hundreds people strong while the mercenaries was only around fifty people strong at that time. Knowing the difference in number, the mercenary leader wants to stop dad. That's why your dad left. He's set on getting justice for his parents." Halena explained.

"After leaving the group, he head towards White Sand village as a wanderer. He.."

"What is a wanderer?" Emi interrupt.

"Hmm... simply put, wanderer are people who travel from place to place, sightseeing." Halena answered short.

Wanderers usually are people travelling looking to increase their experiences, gain wisdom, make connections, or to find something.
