chapter 18: Frontier fort's founding

"Long ago, there was a small human village. But one day, during the coldest winter of the winter years, the settlement was attacked by demons. Unable to fight against demons, the villagers abandoned their home and tried to travel to the nearby village to seek refuge."

"But travelling in the winter of the winter years is the same as seeking death. All landmarks were buried under a thick layer of ice and snow. On top of that, heavy snowstorm falls continuously, it's pretty much impossible to see where they're going. Before long, the villagers got lost and stranded in the middle of nowhere. Their food began to dwindle, and so were their hope to continue living. It was then the villager met their savior."

"After days of wandering around in the snow blindly, the villagers happen across a man standing still in the snow. The villagers hope was lit alight at the sight of a human. They quickly approached the lone figure. But when they got closer, their hope were shattered just as quick. The lone person is covered in ice."

"With how much ice formed on him, the villagers thought it was a dead body, being left standing in the snow as a bad joke or a trap of some sort. But then the freezing body slowly turn it's frozen head towards them. The villagers froze in shock, making it dead silent apart from the sound of wind blowing and the cracking of ice breaking away from the lone strager's neck. The freezing man has a forlorn look on his face."

"The villagers doesn't know what the lone man was doing alone in the freezing snow. But they felt pity for him and decided to share the last of their ration and time with him. They set up camp, give the freezing man a warm blanket, hot broth and share warm stories over the campfire."

"But those foods were their last. They can't hunt as wild animals was hibernating under the thick ice. They were also unable to gather enough firewood to last them through the night as everything was covered in thick ice. So the villagers went to sleep that night accepting the fact that they'll never wake up again."

"But the next morning, they were woken up from their sleep by a delicious smell. The villagers were surprised to see that the fire is still going, even though there were nothing but ashes under the fire. And eventhought their food was finished yesterday, the stranger that they took in yesterday was cooking soup with fresh meat in it."

"The stranger handed out the meals to the villagers with a soft smile on his face. They happily ate the meal. The stranger introduced himself as.."

"Emilea" Emi replied sheepishly.

"Yes. He is the savior of our people. Mom and dad named us in his honor. The villagers don't know much about him, but they know they've struck gold. The person in front of them is a strong magician!"

"After filling their bellies, their worries comes back hitting them. They share their problems with Emilia and ask him to travel with them. He agreed. Thus, they continued their travel together to find a village."

"Day after day passed. Then it become weeks. Yet they still haven't found anything. Emilia was able to locate animals hiding deep under the snow and hunted them so food was not a problem. But they started getting tired,very very tired. Many of them started to give up. Then, Emilia suggest that they build a new village. The villagers laugh at his absurd suggestion, but not for long."

"Emilia stomped his foot on the ice, shattering it into fine dust. Their feet started slipping into the fine ice just like a quicksand would. With a gesture of his hand, a whirl of wind slowly blow the fine ice and snow away, clearing away all the ice that's more than five meters thick as they slowly slipped to the ground beneath. With the ice and snow out of the way, Emilia began cutting the trees down. He swing his hand and a blade of wind slice through the trees, felling all of them at once."

"Although bewildered, their hope started to rise once again and they began moving the woods, making one big cabin. The work was unbelievably quick and they finished it in one day. The villagers were very happy that they finally have a shelter from the freezing cold."

"They spend the rest of winter inside. But comes spring and the worst of the winter year passed. And they face yet another problem. With most of the ice melts away, they realize their new home was built right in the middle of dense forest where many huge beast lives."

"Hungry from the long hibernation, the wild beasts ferociously attack them. But Emilia save them yet again. He effortlessly repelled every wild beast attacks without even touching them. His unparalleled magic makes them grateful that he's on their side. With his protection, the new village prosper."

"Years passed peacefully. But one day, a tragedy happened. While Emilia was away hunting, the village was attacked by demons. The village was devastated. Many were captured by the demons and were carried off to their lair."

"Angered, Emilia run after their trails to their lair. The villagers followed after him as fast as they can. But even while riding horses, they were left far behind. After riding for three days three nights, they finally reach the demon's castle, only to find mountains of demons's corpses lying around everwhere."

"The whole group of demons were defeated by Emilia on his own. The villagers found him at the center of the castle with the rest of the captured villagers."

"Since their village were destroyed, they decide to just stay at the castle. And now the demon's castle were called Frontier Fort. Which is where we are at now." I slowly lowered my voice as Emi is already sound asleep.

Among all the tales mom told, Emi loves this story the most. Probably because the hero have the same name as us. But not me. This story feels like it've been exagerrated a thousand times over. I don't like exagerrated stories like this one. It just doesn't seem real. If Emilia was really that strong of a magician, then why was him standing there freezing in the middle of nowhere in the winter? It just doesn't make sense to me. Why was he not be with his family, with his people?

I look outside the window. We are inside a stone building that is way higher than most of rest. It has a good view. It's night time right now but it's not as dark as nights should be because of the huge spherical celestial body in the sky. It is half hidden behind the horizon, but it's huge body is reflecting a lot of sunlight.

When I first saw it, I thought it was a planet. It's so close by that I can even see continents, sea, desserts and clouds on it. But it might actually be a moon as it's always close by. Or maybe it's the other way around. Maybe the land we are on is it's moon. I don't know.

I shift my gaze to the ceiling and pulled the thick and soft blanket up to our necks. It's so comfy here. It's way more comfortable than our bed back home. Just the blanket itself is thicker than our bed at home. And the bed here is what I imagine a cloud would feel like if it can be touched. The chilly night air is mitigated by the warm blanket and the burning fireplace. Yes, there's even a fireplace in our room! It's a very luxurious room.

Apparently Bear is an important figure of the church. What a shock. Just from what happened during the travel to here, the church is the last place that I'd ever think he is connected to. I'd think he's a black market boss or leader of a gang.
