We were off to the beach again, the following morning. I wasn't outcasted again, but Vikki had made very clear points. I wasn't to go to the beach bar, and I had to wear one of her old ski jackets to prove that there was nothing between Charlotte and I.

I panted and wiped the sweat off my head with a towel. I was drenched in sweat. The sun blazed over head, and my heart pounded in my ears.
"Y/n, are you alright?" Lara said propped on her elbows at Charlotte's side. She was in a lovely tiny blue bikini getting a lovely tan, whilst I was fearing for my life. She didn't even appear to have an issue with Charlotte, why on earth Vikki was so wound up by the thought of an affair that clearly wasn't happening. I brushed the sweat back from the scab across my cheek. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"You don't look good at all."
"Y/n." Charlotte chipped in, sitting up and handing the sun cream to Lara asking her to do her back. "You look awful. We aren't going to judge your body, and if you're worried about burning I have factor fifty."
"I think it suits her." Vikki said, she was at my side in her scimpy red bikini which had lots of bows and long strings at all ends. Her finger jabbed into my leg and I strained a smile. "I'm alright."
"I don't think you are." Charlotte said. "You're face is getting worse, and you're sweating like crazy, just take the coat off."
I bet they thought I was an idiot. I pulled at my eyebrows, rubbing myself down on the towel again. "I'm going to go to the loo." I said getting to my feet. The sun pounding on my neck.
"I'll come with you." Charlotte said, she had a black halter neck bikini that I was incredibly jealous of.
"Its fine." I insisted. "I'll go alone."
"Ok..."
I stomped off through the sand.

People, families screamed and shouted all over the sandy beach, but it was just a haze of noise to me. The only noise I could really depict out of all of it, was the rapid beating of my heart. The fight it had against the heat. The coat was sticking to my back, sweat patches showing through the many layers I had been forced to wear. My vision zoned out, then came back. I leant over, I was going to vomit, I knew I was. My throat was parched and I coughed for some water, I felt like a grape shrivelling up into a raisin. The sun was biting into me, into my stinging cut. My vision was sapped from me again, and the sand shot up to me. I thumped into its fine grains.

When I finally gained control over my senses, I was no longer on the beach. I was on a doctors like chair, in my underwear.
A woman was at the far end of the room, her arms folded, my clothes all cut up and tossed onto the floor at her feet. She was dressed in red and yellow and staring directly at me. "Welcome back."
I blinked multiple times, I could see the burning beach out of the window, the sea looked miles away. "What happened?" I rubbed at my forehead, grinding the specks of sand into my skin. Ouch, was I sunburnt?
"You collapsed on the beach from heat stroke. You should be glad someone came to get us, you could have died in all the clothing you were wearing."
"My coat..." I gasped. If anything had happened to it Vikki would undoubtedly hurt me again.
"We had to cut it off you, all four layers you were wearing." The lifegaurd huffed, tightening her ponytail. She looked incredibly angry at me. I hugged my legs, a bead of sweat running down my back. Vikki would be furious at me, I should be getting back to her as soon as they will let me go.
There was a knock on the door and the lifegaurd opened it. "How is she?"
I gulped, and I felt the embarrassment of everything hitting me all at once.
"She's conscious." The lifegaurd stepped back allowing her colleague to enter. Newt.
He looked me up and down, and scratched his neck. "How do you feel?"
My chin trembled. There was a fan blowing behind me, pushing my soaked hair into my face.
"I've ran you an ice bath, if you can walk we'll stick you in it for a few minutes." Newt said, coming closer and lending me a hand. I took it feebly and attempted to stand up. My knees shook and buckled, I fell into his arms and the first sob escaped me. I had not planned for this to happen. Newt gripped me tightly. "We need to cool you down quickly. Jess, grab the door for me." Before he had even warned me, Newt scooped me up into his arms, and walked me out of the treatment room. I rested my head on his shoulder, I was so stupid. I began to cry, all other sense were blocked out again, and it was just me, wrapped in arms crying.
I felt the chill as I was lowered into a trough of hose water, I grabbed my knees and hugged myself as the arms left me. "Y/n." Newt said, kneeling at my side and brushing my hair. "I need you to keep talking to me, can you do that?"
I wiped my face down and nodded. He fetched a scoop of water, and poured the icy liquid over my head. I shivered and panted as it dribbled all down me. My body went numb, and I panted for air and a drink. "Can I have some water?"
Newt nodded, grabbing me a coffee cup and filling it up from the hose pipe. I sipped away at my drink as he poured the water over my head. "Tell me about you're horse riding as a child." He said, pulling my hair back and getting the water over my shoulders. I felt like a stupid child who needed help bathing. I gulped, sobbing a little bit more as a group of lifeguards walked past staring at me like I was a complete maniac. However I pulled myself together, and in very broken sentences I began to tell Newt about Millie and the show jumping I used to do. He listened heartily, laughing when I told him about falling off and smacking into the wings of the jump and wiping out the girl in front. I had broken my arm and wrist in that accident.
It went silent as I began to shiver the numb fading, leaving me plain cold in this freezing water.
Newt stopped what he was doing and leant on the side of a trough. "Is there anyone you can call to come pick you up?"
I shook my head, picking at the dried skin on my lip.
"I can send a trainee to find Vikki if you want?"
I shook my head firmly at that option, she would say I was being pathetic, and wasting the lifegaurds' essential time.
"Dom?"
I nodded, Dominic was better than anyone else.
"Ok." Newt sighed. "I'll send for him, but you're going to have to fill out an incident form with me..." He drilled his fingers into the side of the trough and clenched his jaw. "Why were you wearing that many layers?  I know you aren't stupid enough to think that what you were doing was sensible."
I hugged my knees tighter. I liked Newt, I really did, he was friendly and kind, with a good sense of humour. I liked his boyfriend, Jeremy, too. Another sobbed escaped me as I realised there was no excuse. I had been in that many layers because I was scared of my wife. Not something I could exactly tell Newt.
He sighed, and got to his feet handing me a towel. "Can you tell me what happened to your face then?"
I climbed out the trough and quickly wrapped my semi naked body in the towel. Warmth tricking through me as I noticed that Newt had the decency to turn his back. "I slipped in the bathroom last night. I was pretty drunk, and hit my face on the corner of the sink." Vikki and I had agreed on that story this morning when the scab had been obvious to her.
"Have you seen a doctor?"
I shook my head.
"You need to see a doctor."
"Its not a big deal."
He grabbed my shoulders and forced me to look at him. "There could be serious injury under that y/n. Something that might have led this to happen today. You could have fluid in your head, or fractured your skull. You really have to see a doctor."
I shook my head. A doctor would instantly know what had happened. It was just a one off, Vikki had apologised for it this morning. It really wasn't worth all the fuss a doctor would turn it into.
"Consider it. For me?" He asked, and I couldn't refuse him.
"If you take me horse riding again, then I'll consider it."
He chuckled, shaking his head and scratching at his chin. "I'm a lifegaurd, I'm not supposed to make those sorts of deals." He sighed and smiled checking around him. We were alone. "But for you yourname, I'll make an exception. I'm off at four tomorrow, so we could do the five o'clock hack?"
I nodded, I could slip away from the girls then. "I'll see a doctor beforehand."
Newt nodded. "Try and do it as soon as possible. Now let's go get you some clothes and fill out this paperwork."

Newt sat at a kitchen styled table in the coffee room whilst I changed in the toilet. He had leant me a spare bikini, the bottom and top halves didn't match, or suit each other in anyway, but it was better than my wet underwear. He gave me an huge mens top, plain grey, to throw on top of that. He had delved into the lost property box for trousers, but had found none. I came out of the toilet, an arm wrapped around myself. I had control on my tears, but the embarrassment was still heavy.
"I just need you to sign here, and here, and then full name there." He said tapping the pen over the page. I did as told filling out the sheet, and then leant on the wall. It was a nice coffee room, consuming the entire of the upstairs of the lifegaurd hut, two old sofas positioned in front of a tv, a kitchen table and then a table football. The far end had two doors, one for the bathroom, the other for the tiny kitchen. It was nice this place, I could see why he had chosen to work here.
"Am I free to go?" I asked.
He nodded chewing on the pen as he scanned over the paperwork. "Yep, as long as you promise not to be back soon."
"I'll try my best." I joked.
Newt filed the paper and put the nibbled pen down. "See you tomorrow then?"
I nodded, and was about to leave, when I twisted and threw my arms around him. "Thank you Newt." I mumbled into his chest. I gulped as I felt wings fluttering in my stomach, I liked the feeling of his flat chest. There was something about it being flat that made it nicer to hug. His hand rested on my shoulder. "See you tomorrow for the ride."
I smiled pulling away with scarlet cheeks. "Bye." I waved as I walked downstairs and out the building where Dom was chatting to one of the other lifeguards, yet again topless. Did that man own a top? His mothers certainly would have if they were here.
He walked me back to his bar, whizzed up a smoothie and fetched a scoop of ice cream before taking me back to the hotel, where I showered, changed into real clothes and went back out to find Vikki and the others.

They all quizzed me on where I had been for so long, I whizzed up a story about feeling unwell and having a nap and shower back at the hotel. I would continuously glance at the lifegaurd truck, as they interrogated me. He was up there, sat in his uniform with Jay, chatting and surveying the sea. Newt. I sighed, oh Newt. I thought I caught his eye at one point, and I might have still been delusional but I could have sworn he winked at me. I had to be delusional, the feeling it stirred in my abdomen was unholy, and my cheeks heated up.
I wasn't in a bikini like the others, a simple top and shorts, but still it felt like I could breath. I actually enjoyed the last few hours on the beach.

That night it was a miracle that Vikki and I didn't argue, we watched an episode of our favourite series. Her arm around my shoulders, before laying down together in bed and wishing each other a good night.
