It was curfew and the gladers were all snoring away in their hammocks. I was more nocturnal than them, I wouldn't fall asleep until the early ours of the new day. I passed the time reading my book, hiding under the covers with a torch feeling like a criminal. It gave me a rush of adrenaline that I really shouldn't get.
Suddenly there was a sharp noise. I flicked off the torch stuffing it under my pillow and lay down, one eye open towards the door. Was Alby doing a night patrol? He had done them before, caught a glader having a midnight feast, did not go down well.
There it was, the noise again! It was small enough for only me to hear, but distinctive. It wasn't coming from the hallway as my earlier thoughts, it was from the window. I pulled back the curtains, opened the window and stuck my head out.
"Pisst y/n, down here!" A thick accent whispered loudly. Newt stood below my window holding a handful of small pebbles. He looked as handsome as ever, the breeze gently blowing his hair in his face. He beckoned for me to come down, so grinning I shut the window got changed as fast as possible and slipping on fluffy boots and a thick coat ran downstairs.
I ran round to Newt buttoning up my coat, the days in the glade were hot but the nights were freezing. The cute blonde boy stood waiting, he had dropped the Pebbles and was offering me a hand. Taking it we walked away from the homestead. He led me to the deadheads, that in the pale moon glow looked like crippled figures.
"Where are we going?" I asked, my breath like smoke in the cold air.
"I've got something to show you." He said, his mouth close enough to my ear to make me shiver in delight.
He led us deeper into the woods to a stage where we had to climb over fallen tree trunks and step over large roots that engulfed the pathway. A small dread began to ring at the back of my mind, I've read many books where a girl gets taken into the woods too far away to be rescued. No, I shook the thought away, Newt wouldn't he was my best friend - my only friend - and I trust him.
A light ahead grew, it was yellow like candles. The light moved and at some points would disappear as quick as it came back.
Newt stopped, turning so his eye bore into mine. "Y/n, you have to promise not to tell anyone about this. Ok?"
I nod gulping, suddenly this didn't seem such a good idea.
We moved close to the light, it formed into a small hut. Through the small windows could be seen shadows of other boys inside, their voices a hushed chatter interrupted occasionally by a loud roar of excitement.
I squeezed tight to Newt's hand as he walked up to the door, knocking three times in a rap tap tap rhythm. The door opened enough for a set of eyes to peer through at us, it was Gally.
"Newt?" He said in a rough voice that was clearly meant to not sound like his, even though it did.
"Yeah, Gally lets us in." Newt responded stepping towards the door.
"You got the chick?" Gally asked not bothering with the secret voice.
"Yeah, y/n is with me." Newt flashed a glance at me, I gulped nodding uneasy. However much this idea of fun Newt had it was beginning to scare me.
Gally opened the door fully, stepping back allowing us in. He smiled at me as I passed under his arm. "Welcome." He was being strangely nice, explaining the strong linger of alcohol. He took my coat hanging it on a small coat rack and then left us, securing the door.
I let my hand fall out of Newt's, this place was amazing. A small fire was in the corner the glowing flames funnelling up a chimney, next to it was a round table surrounded by a huddle of boys all cheering and edging each other on to gamble.
