Tonight, on the last week of our trip we had rented out a party hall which came with it's own bar and free snacks. I wore a modest black skirt, with a twisted neckline. I waltzed in earlier than Vikki who had been for a run before hand, she said she was going to meet us here. I couldn't find Charlotte either, a few of the other girls were here, Becca, Susan, but I barely knew them, they were some of Charlotte's friend from university. I had nothing in common with them, we couldn't even share university stories, and it was obvious that none of them were thrilled that I was a common waitress, not a high paid business woman like them. I went over to Lara.
I only noticed it as I approached Lara but every single one of them was staring at me, whispering and pointing. I glanced around and gulped.
"Hey." I smiled at Lara. "Can I have one of those ice creams, they look amazing!"
Lara slid the box away from me, glaring at me down her nose. "I don't think so."
I tried very hard to remain calm, but it was impossible. They were all staring at me with folded arms like I had killed someone.
"What's this about?"
Lara raised an eyebrow and scoffed. "Charlotte told us what you are... freak!"
I gasped and made a fast exit for the door, but it was flung open from the other side, and Charlotte strolled in. At her side was a red eyed Vikki, her fists clenched into rock hard balls. "You cheated on me?" Vikki whispered.
"No, I can explain."
"You cheated on me with a disgusting male!" Vikki screamed, spit flying from her mouth and covering my dress.
Out of fear and instinct, I began to back away, stumbling as I reached for anything to defend myself with.
"Please Vikki, I didn't choose to be like this."
"Neither did I! Why of all the people I could love did it have to be someone as filthy as you?!"
I sniffed, and bit down on my lip. Someone jabbed me in the shoulder and I was pushed closer to the steam sprouting Vikki. "Please." I begged but it was no use, Vikki couldn't see past her own pain. "I'll take drugs."
"That doesn't hide what you are and what you did!" She hissed.
"Please don't hurt me, I couldn't help it."
She pushed herself right into my face, her breath was hot and sticky, full of acid. "I'm not going to touch you!" My knees were shaking uncontrollably. "But they..." she cocked her head like she was possessed. "They can do whatever they want to you."
I twisted to glimpse at the small group of girls within the party room, the balloons suddenly a celebration of my death than this festive moment. They pulled out boxes of eggs and more ice cream, they loaded themselves. I shoved past Vikki, fearful for my life as the first egg shattered against the wall at my head. I fled the room into the darkness outside the hotel.I wondered round the beacb, wiping the tears from my eyes. Charlotte had betrayed me, she had promised not to tell Vikki. I stood before the sea and let it sap at my feet. It was bitter cold. I wasn't an amazing swimmer, and I would certainly freeze and drown to death out there at this time of night. I stepped out further. My life could never be what it used to be, I had spent so long trying to avoid this, but now there was no escape. I slipped up once and years of work came crashing down on my head. I Ioved men. I was attracted to flat chests and muscle. There was nothing I could do to change that.
All the lights were out on the lifegaurd hut, and it looked like even Dom wasn't working tonight. No one could stop me. I would die and my body would wash up tomorrow. They could bury me wherever they wanted to, I had no real home. But who would it be that pulled me from the ocean? Gut instinct told me it would be Newt, the wickedness of fate meant it could only be him. I bit my lip and with a sob I retreated. I couldn't do this to him, anyone but him. I went for a walk instead.
I hadn't got far before I spotted the bonfire, with loads of drunk men laughing and enjoying each other's company around it. I stumbled over, scanning over their silhouettes. Newt had to be in there, he had to. The first tear fell down my face and I pushed forwards in the sand. I really needed a hug.
I heard three men joking around away from the fire, they were pushing each other, jumping on each other. Men being men. I wrapped my arms around myself as they drew closer, all pointing at me, laughing with each other.
"What we got here lads?" I heard one yell, and the other replied with a cat whistle. I scrunched myself together and moved on.
"Oh come on pretty."
"Leave her alone." The third one shoved his mate. "Y/n?"
I bit my lip and another tear fell down my face. "Dom?" I called and ran over to him, jumping into his arms.
He wasn't Newt but it was good enough, I clung onto his bare shoulders, his bead necklace digging into my forehead.
"Woah. Alright." He laughed pushing me back, his friends staring at me with open mouths.
"Where is Newt?" It flew out of my mouth faster than any decision I had ever made.
Dom shrugged. "I think he went into town for the evening."
"Where is he? I need him."
"What happened?" Dom shoved his mate back who was coming at me with hungry eyes.
"Vikki found out I'm hetero. Where is Newt? I really need him"
Dom let out a low whistle. "Shit, that sucks."
"Yeah." The tears fell faster. "Where the fuck is Newt, Dom?!"
Dom sighed and rubbed his brow. "We were heading into town for more drinks, I'll take you."
We all walked to Dom's truck, the other boys looking at me with dribbling mouths the entire way. They were all high again. It explained why Dom never went home, his mothers would be devastated to see him now. He was a drug addict who ran a bar, yet he managed to have a wail of the time, constantly full of laughter and jokes. He loved his life, and I was deeply jealous.
We piled into his truck, he drove, one of his mates in the passenger seat, and the other one and I jumped in the open air back.
It was nice getting to ride in the back, the night sky all around us, wind whirling through my hair. I could finally relax, my muscles aching. I was going to have a divorce. Something I had always vowed to avoid, but only after eight months, it was happening. Was this the right thing to be doing? Should I be back at the hotel trying to salvage it? I knew there were drugs to cope with these hetero hormones, maybe I should be looking at them? However, as the car span into a parking lot at an alarming speed - the man and I clinging onto the sides in order to not be thrown out - I knew this was the right thing to be doing.
"He's in there." Dom yelled, leaning out the window.
I climbed down the side of the truck and landed on the tarmac with two feet. Two extremely wobbly feet.
"We'll grab some beers and come back for you."
"Thank Dom." I smiled, shivering, it was bloody cold in town.
"Y/n?"
"Hmm?"
"Just a heads up, Newt might not want to see you. He came to the bar the other day and was pretty upset."
I frowned. "About what?"
Dom chewed his lip and shrugged. "Can't say, just don't get your hopes up."
I watched as he darted out of the car park at an even faster pace. They were certainly eager for their beers. I waited till his headlights were out of sight, and turned to the restaurant. It was cute looking, warm light illuminating from the windows, a cheerful mutter of people as I walked into the doorway.
"How can I help you madam?" A waiter immediately jumped to the door, eager to help me.
"I'm just looking for someone, thanks." I walked past him, scouring through the many faces and hair styles. My stomach was churning like crazy, and I felt a little light headed. There he was, the back of his head to me in the far corner. I rushed over.
