It's been three days since that night and you still haven't explained anything to Newt, in fact you've hardly talked to him. Troy has kept you at his side, like you were on a leash, when you went off too far he tugged you back by your throat.
The bus came to a sudden halt, the breaks screeched and the back of the bus was swerving. The kids were screaming. Your arm was securing Em in her seat, while your other hand gripped the seat so your life. Your one working eye was squeezed shut.
The bus stopped at a right angle. You breath deeply opening your working eye, your black eye was squashed shut from the swelling, everything was spinning and there was two. You shut your eyes again and lean your head in your hands, I'm going to throw up was all you could think. "Y/n, what was that?" Your sister timidly asks, she had climbed out of her seats and was gazing out the window, her nose like a little piggy as she pressed it against the glass. "I'm sure it was nothing." You reassure. It had better had not been nothing, you think to yourself, reckless driving.
"Everyone stay in your seats, seat belts on." You shout at the children, who like Em had all gone to the windows. They follow your orders, the clicking of seat belts proving it.
You stumble to the door which was already open, you walk out, still seeing double of everything. The floor crunched under your feet. Glass. On top the bus was eight men, you shelter your eye from the sun with a hand, no wait, four men just two of each. "Y/n, your gonna want to see this." Minho calls. You climb onto the bonnet and then to the roof with the help of Newt's hand. He pulled you into him for support, he looked at you through his four eyes, full of pity, his hand gently running over the swollen bruise. You pull away and shake your head, you need to concentrate. Slowly it all merged into one of each thing. You looked over the road, it was jam packed with abandoned cars, trucks, lorries and military jeeps. It went on as far as the eye could see, your heart dropped to your feet. There was no way through that. "Who was driving?" You ask, getting back to the big deal.
Minho sheepishly raises his hand to head height, disguising it as his correcting his hair. "There was a biter lying on the road and I tried to get around it, but then there was this, and..." You quickly dismiss him.
The cars were all parked at odd angles, boots and doors open. More shattered window glass on the floor.
"Could we move them all?" Newt asks, he was so close behind you, it made you jump.
"No, the four of us can't move a lorry." Thomas replies, pointing to a large Asda lorry. You sigh and roll your eyes wanting to correct him, five, just cause I'm not a man doesn't mean I can't help.
"Supplies?" Newt suggests.
You nod. "Troy you stay with the kids, us four will go."
You go to climb down but Newt gets in your way. "I'll go first." He whispers, climbing down onto the bonnet and lending you a hand. You smile kindly, maybe having a black eye did have benefits. He practically carried you off the bus bonnet, settled you down gently and looked to Minho and Thomas. "Y/n and I will take this lane, you two take that one."
You and newt walked along, pulling out suitcases in the trunks and all sorts. You laugh as you pull out a bag full of family pictures and letters. Newt looks at you quizzically. "The world falls to shit and people grab the family photo albums." He laughs with you.
You continued on gathering water bottles and canned food, anything of use. "You want me to explain about Troy and I, don't you?" You ask.
"You did promise." He shrugs.
"When my father left, he refused to pay child care and with my mother constantly drunk she wasn't earning. Em was starting school, she needed to go somewhere good, so I found Troy who had connections to the best boarding school in the country." You look to Newt, ashamed. "I gave up my life for her, pulled out of university to earn money to pay for her uniform while I dated Troy so she could go to a good school for free. And this is the price." You point to your eye.
He pulls you into a hug. "But why stay with him?"
You bury your head into his shirt. "Because I've lived with him for two years, and I know he wouldn't survive out here on his own. I can kill biters but I'm not a murderer." He pressed your head into him, squashing your eye. "Ow, ow, ow." You cry pushing him away.
"Sorry love, I'm so sorry." He panics.
Suddenly you were seeing two again, you felt dizzy, you groaned hitting the side of your head with your hand.
"Love, what's wrong?" Newt panics, he holds your hand and sits you down on the floor.
"I keep seeing two of everything, like there's two of you." You go to stroke his face but your hand passes through thin air.
"Stay here." He commands and runs off.
You laugh, wasn't really anywhere to go was there. He returns soon carrying a small green bag with a white cross on it. He opens it up and rummages through, next thing you know he's putting tablets in your hand and a drinks bottle. "It's just pain killers, love."
You shake your head and hand it back to him. "No Newt, other people will need this, we can't afford to waste medicine."
He forces the tablets back on you. "No, your taking these."
"Newt." You whine, shaking your head making the pain worse.
"Y/n." He says suddenly very serious, it was something you hadn't seen in him and it made you thankful. "I can't keep watching you in pain, OK? So please take them, if not for you then for me... And of course Emilie and the kids, they are relying on you."
You give in nodding. "For you." You gulp down the pills, and get to your feet. "Come on let's keep going."
He laughs and follows walking close by your side.
