You run back into the workshop, knowing what must be done. You slide your legs and then upper body into the suit of armor. Armored leather gloves finish tightening the straps to power pack as you hear cars flying down the street and drop ships overhead. You throw your medical pack over your shoulders and tighten the straps. Lastly, you grab your sword. Refined and honed by yourself and your father, you see your reflection in the polished and shining metal. Sparks fly  from the blade as you give it a few test swings. You slide the sword into its holster on your left hip. You kick open the door of the workshop and stare into the sky. Null sector drop ships flood the heavens as rain pounds down upon the world. You had no idea why they attacked Seattle, but you had to find your parents.

You hop the fence and cram yourself into the front seat of your rusty pickup truck. The engine revs and your tires spin on the wet pavement as you take off down the street towards the city and restaurant that you parent's were suppose to be at.

After a sharp right turn, you are stopped by a military road block.

"Hey! Where the hell do you think you are going buddy?!" A military officer yells at you. You abandon your pickup and shove past the military line. People are swarming out of the city past you, seeking refuge in any building that they could find as the corrupt omnics flood the city streets.

"Hey buddy!" the same military officer yells at you, "I said what the HELL are you doing?" You ignore him again as a hail of gunfire falls upon you. Shield up, you take the bullets on, protecting yourself and anyone behind you. Omnics start to charge you. The sword surges in your right hand as you let out a massive horizontal swing that slices through half a dozen Null Sector units. They collapse into a smoking heap before your feet. You turn back to the officer.

"There are people still in the city! My parents are in there. I need to get them out." You boom out over the sound of the pouring rain. After the display you put on the officer has his men rally behind you.

"What is your name soldier?" you ask the officer that seemed to be in charge.

"Josh," he responds, "these are all that are left of my men. We will do the best that we can to support you."

"It is good to have you with me. I am (Y/N). Stick with me and let's get as many people out of the city as we can. Have your men cover the sides and the sky. I have anything that lies ahead of us." The remaining members of Josh's squad form up behind you. The skies are filled with omnics and the streets become a field of crushed cars and broken buildings. You slowly lead Josh's team down the city streets, searching for anyone that remains. You finally come upon the building that your father and mother were suppose to be having dinner at. The building's front and roof have been blown off in an explosion and you hurry over the rubble, throwing boulders and tables alike out of your way as you call out your parent's names.

"(F/N)! (M/N)! MOM! DAD!" You scream as you tear the buildings apart even more that what it already was. You find your parents, pinned against a wall under a boulder, bullet wounds litter their chests. Around them lays four omnics, all with a clean bullet hole to the head. You see your father's revolver laying on the ground next to him, still smoking from the shots he let off.

"My boy," he says with a weak smile, "you look just as I did back in the day except I was a bit more handsome."

You run to your parents. "No. Please no! You cannot go! All the adventures and missions! All of the lives we are suppose to save! The enemies were are going to take down! Together!" You scream through tears.

Your father looks at you. His once sparkling blue eyes seem to be fading. He and your mother both grab your hands.

"Those adventures and people will still be had and saved, but by you (Y/N)," your father says flashing a hint of his once brilliant smile.

"Your father is right. We have raised you well my son. The years of combat training with your father and all of the time you spent in the operating room and sick bay with me will come in very handy. Overwatch will be gaining an invaluable asset." Your mother says, beaming at her once little boy.

"NO! I can save you! You trained me for this!" You start to fumble with your pack. Your hands tremble as you rifle through the contents, hoping to find something that will save your parents. A combination of water from the sky and your eyes start to fall into the pack.

"My boy," your father says as he puts a hand on your shoulder, "our time has come. It is too late to save us. We have been wounded for too long and we have lost too much blood. But do not worry my son, everything is going to be alright. You are ready." he says with a weak smile.

"But...but I am not ready," you whimper out.

"Of course you are silly child. You have spent years at our side. It is now your time." says your father.

"I am not worried about that," you cry, "I am just not ready to be without my parents."

Tears roll down their cheeks. as well as your own. "You might not think you are, but you are stronger than both of us. You will become one of the champions of the people (Y/N)." Your mother says as she runs her hand over your cheek, wiping away a stream of tears.

"(Y/N) we have a large number of Null Sector forces moving in! We need to get the hell out of here and get underground now!" Josh yells over the thunder and rattling of machine gun fire.

You stare at  your parents. The light of your world was slowly fading before your very eyes. Even on the verge of death, both of them are smiling at you with tears filling their eyes. "Go my son. Protect the people. Do what is right. Overwatch needs heroes like you more than ever. The world needs you more than ever."

"(Y/N) we need to move now!!"

You smile a sad smile at your parents as tear continue to fall. "I will make you proud mother and father."

"We know you will. Now go. Carry the legacy. Wear the bear with pride son. We both love you and are more proud of you than you could ever imagine." Your mother and father smile weakly at you, then slowly close their eyes for the final time. You then clamber over the top of the rubble and look back once more at your parents. They lay motionless, holding hands as the rain pours down on their bodies.

"I will not fail you. I will protect the people. I will carry the legacy." You whisper to yourself. You slide down and position yourself in front of the soldiers. You feel the energy surging through your sword as you lift it into the air and then thunder cracks out as your stab it into the pavement. A massive wave of energy is sent out in front of you, knocking down the Null Sector omnics that are swarming your position and causing some to explode as well as sending cracks down the pavement.

"(Y/N)! Null Sector has every major exit out of the city blocked. We have reports that the train stations and sewers are being used to take shelter. We need to move there fast or we are dead. The closest entrance is half a mile away," Josh yells at you as his men return fire on the omnics that are being dropped in. Josh grabs you by the shoulder. "You are far better fit to lead than I am. These are your men now. We follow you and will do as you command."

"They are our men now Josh. We will command them as one. Men!" you yell out, "with me!" The soldiers fall in line behind you. Shield up. Sword at the ready, you lead your men into the ruined city that lay ahead.

Woo! Another chapter down! This will be the end of the backstory for now since I think I have the reader character pretty well fleshed out but let me know what you think! And yes, the Overwatch crew will be introduced in the next chapter so do not worry haha. Enjoy!
