Virgil screamed as he writhed in pain. His body felt like it had been engulfed in flames. His body jerked and twisted as he seized. To anybody, but a werewolf you would think he was dying. He felt like he was dying. He could feel his own bones snapping and breaking in different directions. It had been like this for about 20 minutes before everything stopped. He laid there gasping for breath. Ones he had stopped moving a hand reached out and stroked his hair.
“Shh, easy there Storm Cloud you are doing great. It’ll be okay I promise.” Roman soothed gently. He hated this. He hated hearing his mate cry out in pain and not be able to help. He had barely even begun and it would only get worse. The first shift came in waves, each wave more painful than the last.
“What’s happening to me!?” Virgil gasped out desperately.
“You’re shifting love.” Roman said gently.
“It hurts! It hurts so much!” Virgil cried.
“I know, I know it hurts love, but it’ll be okay, I promise. It’ll pass you just have to let it take its course.”
Virgil looked like he was going to try to talk again when he screamed out in agony once again. Looks like the next wave had started. Roman pulled his hand back to stay out of the way, didn’t stop saying reassuring words to him. That Virgil would be okay, that he was doing great, that everything would be alright. He did this to help Virgil but he did it mostly for himself. He assumed Virgil couldn’t hear him, but he had to keep reassuring himself that the screaming would stop and that his mate was safe. It was almost a half hour of screaming later that Virgil fell quite again this time he was limp laying there on the ground. Roman assumed he had passed out from the pain. Roman remembers being told he had passed out several times during his first shift. It’s a process not many wolves remember well.
While he waited for the next wave to come he looked at Virgil’s necklace. It was pulsing at a fast rate of speed with its purple glow. It seemed to be matching Virgil’s breathing.
Roman suddenly had a thought. He didn’t even realize he had unlocked the bars door of the cell until he already had. He took the necklace in his hand and felt warmth resonated through it. Roman felt power surge through him as he held the silver pendent in his hand. He dropped it and stumbled away clutching his hand to his chest. Virgil whimpered in his unconscious state and subconsciously clutched for the pendant. He then curled his body around it protectively.
Roman seemed to find himself again and relised he was being stupid and got out of the cell. Locking it and returning to his previous spot on the outside. It was a few minutes before Virgil began crying out in pain again.
________
Patton, Logan, Emile, Remy, Remus, and Cassidy all sat in silence in the living room. They could hear Virgil’s screams and it put all their nerves on edge. None of them would be sleeping that night.
After one particularly blood curdling scream Patton had had enough. “That’s it, I am going to go check on him.”
“Patton don’t be irrational-” Logan stated but immediately clammed up when his mate sent daggers at him with his eyes.
“Patton I know this is hard, but Roman can handle it. He is Virgil’s mate he will be the only one who can help him anyways.” Emile tried to reason. “Besides this isn’t the first time you have heard a wolves first shift. This is normal.”
“Except it’s not!” Patton argued. “He doesn’t know what is happening to him. He won’t understand. He must be so scared.” Patton said worried and glancing at the door.
“You sound like your his mate.” Remus stated casually knowing he was going to create tension. But hey, he was saying what everyone was thinking.
Logan growled and was by Patton in an instant pulling him into his chest.
“Oh, Logie I don’t mean to. I’m so sorry. I just feel this deep need to protect him. I can’t explain it. Not in a romantic galant knight way though. It’s more like a parent wanting to protect their son.” Patton explained trying to calm down his mate.
Cassidy rolled his eyes, “Patton did you forget what your job is as a Gamma?”
“Oh right, I literally was just telling Virgil about that!” Emile said excitedly. “Well not literally, but yesterday.”
Patton’s eyes widened as he understood why he felt so protective of Virgil. “Oh, duh I feel stupid now.”
“You are not stupid,” Logan stated nuzling his face into Patton neck.
They had all kind of relaxed due to a lull in the screams when they picked back up again. Patton stiffened. His instincts went into overdrive and he immediately tried to dart towards where the screaming was coming from. Logan picked him up by the waist and held him in his arms. “He is okay Patton. He’s okay.”
_________
It was several hours later and Virgil was dying. He was sure of it. He didn’t know anything else at this point. Pain was all he knew. It was consuming him. Engulphing him in a what felt like never ending tsunami of torture. He wasn’t even screming anymore. He had screamed to the point he physically couldn’t scream anymore. It was none stop now no reprieve whatsoever. Just constant torture. Then finally something snapped his body jerked one last time and everything stopped. He wasn’t in pain, he didn’t feel anything. He actually felt warm but not uncomfortably so. He was just floating in blissful nothingness. He didn’t think about anything either. No worries, no past, just barely existing. He wanted to stay like that. Forever.
_________After five hours of watching his mate slowly morph from human to wolf Roman finally was able to let out a sigh of relief. Laying before him was a fully shifted pitch black wolf panting heavily. His body exhausted from the shift. But at last it was finally over.
