DO NOT SKIP

It was a cold and rainy night towards the end of April. It was late, no one dared to be out at this time in this kind of weather. Even the drunk and the homeless had gone to seek shelter. Except for one lonely silhouette. It was hunched over, shielding its precious cargo from the harsh elements as it darted across the abandoned streets. Twisting and turning in different directions until it finally found its destination. The figure stepped into the light cast out from the building it approached, and had there been any onlookers they would have seen a tired woman drenched in rain and looking crazed with panic. She quickly scaled the steps of the building leading to the doorway, holding her precious bundle close to her chest. Once she reached the pinnacle of the steps she halted. She looked down to what she held in her arms.

It was a small child only a few hours old at most. The baby was fast asleep but once it had lost the heat from its mother it began to stir. Knowing her time was short, she acted quickly. She placed her child down in front of the door, knelt down, and placed a warm kiss upon its forehead to make the baby calm. With tears in her eyes, she removed a necklace from around her neck and fastened it around her child. It was silver and in the shape of a crescent moon. It was intricately designed with the child's name being spelled out. The moon bore a floating purple orb that dangled delicately.

“I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry.” She sobbed. Finally, she knocked hesitantly on the door. Hard so that it would be heard. The loud banging made the small child wake. It’s eyes quickly pooling with tears. The woman quickly darted into the night away from the orphanage so she would not be seen, but not before saying one last goodbye.
