“Molly! Molly Stop!” Virgil screamed as he watched Molly literally break in front of him and he couldn’t get to her to comfort her. But it seemed Molly was in her own world. She couldn’t even hear him anymore. Her mind screaming at her. Purple flames started to crawl up her body, but it didn’t seem to burn her. It seemed to be trying to comfort her and calm her down. It wasn’t working and the more she freaked out the larger the flames became. Surrounding her whole form. She curled in tight on herself pulling at her hair letting out an ear splitting scream. Virgil had to cover his ears to shelter them from the sound. The flames bursted around her making the whole room engulfed in flames. But they never came near Virgil. A perfect circle of flameless area surrounded his cage. It was like an invisible shield was blocking it.

Molly’s scream eventually died out, her vocal chords not being able to support the sound anymore. All that was left was a harsh breathy noise that should have been a screm. It was the most broken sound Virgil had ever heard. Even then that died out too. She had reverted to just silently sobbing.

Virgil just stared in horror at what he was seeing before him. She was so broken. He had never thought the strong confident girl he had aspired to be like as a child could get so damaged. Even when she was living with them for the past few weeks she had never let on how damaged she was. Virgil wanted so badly to reach out and hold her. To ease her pain and bring her comfort. But he couldn’t and it was pissing him off.

He then felt a warm feeling build on his chest. He glanced down to see his necklace glowing a pale purple color not the usual bright neon purple it glowed when his wolf was surfacing. He had honestly forgot he even had the necklace after everything that has been happening. Virgil shook his head and elected to ignore it. All he wanted right now was to comfort Molly but he needed to figure out how. A buzz started to form in his chest. It was nice warm and comforting, but he wasn’t the one who needed it. He watched as Molly rocked herself back and forth yanking and pulling at her hair, tears still spilling down her face. The fire is still raging around them. He wished whatever that feeling was he wished he could transfer it to Molly. If it could ease the turmoil going on her head, he would send it all to her.

Instantly Virgil was slammed with intense fear and pain in his chest gasping for air. He heard a small gasp from the other cage, he looked to see Molly staring at him clarity in her eyes now. The flames had even flickered out but now Virgil was the one freaking out. So many different emotions swirled inside him it was overwhelming. Anger, fear, sadness, regret, guilt. All of them were hitting him at once.

“Virgil!” Molly tried to say but her voice only came out a harsh whisper. “Why did you do that? What have you done?” She demanded.

“I don’t know I-I don’t know what’s happening!” Virgil said closing his eyes harshly. His breathing labored.

Molly looked at his necklace and gasped. “No, no, no Virgil stop! Please stop!” She could feel herself relaxing more and more by the minute, and despite that that only served to terrify her, because Virgil was getting worse and worse. “Stop!” She begged, but Virgil couldn’t hear her. His eyes were glowing a glossy pale color. And he was frozen entirely. She had to snap him out of it. What could she say that would possibly make him stop.

“You’re hurting Roman too!” She screamed as loud as her hoarse voice could manage.

Virgil blinked and the color was gone. Molly felt a flood of negative emotions return to her, but she was able to remain seemingly calm. Both parties were left gasping for air. After all of that. Virgil looked at Molly horror etched into his facial features.

“What just happened?”

__________

Roman and the other’s had been running for hours now. They had tracked their smell for as long as they could, but now they were running almost blind. The sent had been lost when they crossed a river. Roman was just following gut on where to go. He was sure the mate bond would lead him to him. He had to get to Virgil.

‘Ro-man,’  Patton said through the mind link. He was so exhausted that he was having a hard time even getting through to him.  ‘We.. we need to take a break.’

Roman only growled in response and pushed his legs harder. Logan however, had had enough of this. He pushed himself in front of Roman and stopped.

Roman’s lip curled back into a snarl that’s meaning was clear as day. Move.

Logan’s grey wolf didn’t so much as budge. ‘Roman we need to stop. Even if we do find him. We are in no shape to fight! Look at us!’ Logan growled. Roman paused and glanced around at the members of his pack. Patton’s small blonde wolf had collapsed into the foliage of the forest as soon as the group had come to a stop panting heavily. Remus’s brown wolf was up against Cassidys’s brown and black wolf leaning against each other for support. Emile’s cream colored wolf was laying down under Remy’s greyish blask wolf who was licking behind Emile’s ears.

Roman really hated to admit it but Logan was right. He growled and didn’t say anything, but he moved over to a shady spot under a tree and laid down with a huff. Seeing their Alpha give permission the whole pack collapsed to the ground. Roman laid his head on his paws and watched as the rest of his pack started the process of regaining their energy. Patton’s wolf snuggled in close to Logan. Remy splayed himself over Emile. Cassidy and Rumus just continued to lean on each other as they laid down.

Roman’s chest tightened. He understood they needed a break, but they didn’t understand what he was going through. They all had their mates by their side, and Roman didn’t. He could also feel the fear that was coursing through Virgil. He needed to know Virgil was okay. He had to. He… felt a slight calming feeling blossoming in his chest. He didn’t understand what was happening. Then as soon as it came it disappeared. He whimpered and cried out. He started pawing at his head as he shook with overwhelming fear. It wasn’t his fear either. It was Virgil’s and that only served to freak Roman out more. The others had shot up from their resting position to see Roman’s wolf freaking out. He was whimpering and clawing at his face. He had his ears low against his head, his tail tucked tight under himself. He howled in pain. High pitched barking made all of their hearts lerch, but they didn’t understand what was happening or how to help. Finally after a minute of torture, his body finally relaxed leaving only the  lingering feeling of fear he had already felt from Virgil before. Roman panted breathlessly. He felt completely drained.

‘We- we have to find him…’ Roman cried this was the first time he had spoken since finding the letter. The pack had never heard Roman sound so sad before, and that was saying something considering what he’s been through lately. Roman tried to push himself onto his feet, but Remus’s nose nudged him back down.

‘Sorry bro, but we can’t right now. You need to rest. I promise we’ll get him back. I promise.’ Remus said gently trying to calm his brother down. ‘Just sleep now.’

Roman couldn’t help but be reminded of something Virgil once said to him “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.” A pit formed in Roman’s stomach as that thought came to him before he quickly drifted into a restless sleep.
