Chapter 17 probably

The ringing in my pocket caught Dan's attention, but I couldn't care less. The moment was quiet despite the music around us. It was now official, we were together, no more questioning.

The ringing in my pocket stopped for a moment but started once again. Annoyed I checked who it was, dread filled my entire body as I read the name, Chris. Nothing good can come from a call from him, especially this late at night.

"I have to take this," I told Dan as he stared at the name.

"Don't."

"I have to," I said once again, this time changing my tone. Without waiting for a response I took off to a quieter place a couple yards away. Once I answered the phone I didn't even have time to say hi or complain, Chris talked immediately.

"Where are you," Chris asked quickly, the sound of gunshots in the distance

"Donna, What's happening?"

"What the fuck are you doing in Donna"

"I'm with Dan"

"Send me your location, I need you."

"Need me?"

"I followed your dumb advice now just send me your location!"

I sent my location, I heard yells and even more gunshots in the distance, he wasn't alone, I recognized a voice but couldn't quite put a name on it.

"FUCKING GO!" There was a loud gunshot followed by a crackling noise, I looked down at my phone to see it hang up automatically, saying that the device is unreachable.

As I put my phone back in my pocket, I turned around to find Dan walking my way, concern written plainly on his face.

"What did he say?" Dan asked and I could tell he was afraid of my answer.

"He needs me for something and that he's coming"

"Don't let him"

"I already gave him the location"

"Don't go, Chris is bad news"

"I know but it's my fault this time."

"What do you mean?"

"I can't tell you."

"But I'm your partner now, you can't hide stuff from me."

"I'm sorry but I can't okay."

"If you keep hanging out with Chris you're going to end up like us, you don't want that it's not normal, it will take over your life."

"I was in this long before you," I told him .

"No. You don't know." Dan tried to warn me, but I did know, they aren't dragging me into this, I am and one day Dan will understand that.

"I got to go, Chris will be here any moment."

"Don't go."

"Bye"

"John, what about me," I paused and saw the fear in his eyes, I was going away and leaving him here.

"I'm sorry."

Each step I took away from him felt like a bullet going through my chest, leaving a dark hole inside me.

I got to the roadside just in time for a familiar looking van to swerve right in front of me.

"Get in." To my surprise it was Adam who opened the door, hand outstretched and a gun pointed out to the road. Without wasting time I entered his car, Adam handed me his gun and took out another from his pocket.

"Wait!" I heard Dan's voice behind me, barely a whisper. He was running to the car but before he could say another word a bullet hit the seat in front of me, I looked at Dan one last time before closing the door, there was no way I was letting him come along.

Chris stepped on the gas as Adam and I shot out the back, the glass was already broken, making shooting easier. The man in the other car shot back at us, it looked like he was alone. I tried to aim for him but my inexperience made me a bad shot.

"Where are we going?" I asked but Chris didn't answer, instead without warning he turned the car around, making me and Adam hit our heads. In a second we were completely rotated, the guy behind us, now right in front of us.

Chris got out his pistol and lowered his window, as we were about to pass the car, Chris leaned back and shot randomly at the guy. The man shot back but one of the bullets must have hit him, his car swerved to the right and into a tree.

"What is happening?" I asked, a question I seemed to ask a lot these days.

"I'm killing everyone."

"Makes sense," I said sarcastically.

"Like you said, I'm quitting this business, unfortunately that means killing people who have a problem with it."

"Why is Adam here?" I questioned.

"Oh he shot my dealer and of course I have to defend my homeboy." Adam hit his chest and pointed at Chris, Chris rolled his eyes and looked away.

"Okay, now why am I here?"

"I need your help taking down one more guy, he doesn't know I'm coming but he is well guarded, he's rich and his mansion is filled with guys."

"And you are taking me, a guy who can't aim for shit."

"Don't forget the crackhead," Chris chuckled at Adam's hurt expression.

"Aren't we just a lovely team," Adam said full heartedly and I couldn't help but smile at the trouble i'm getting into.
