I love Romerica.
I don't ship it as much as AmeLiet, but it is my second favorite Hetalia ship.
There's been a history of immigration of Italian to the US (most of them from Southern Italy). In addition, during WWII, many Southern Italians viewed the Americans in 1943 as liberators and welcomed them. After WWII, Italy became an ally of the US.
Hetalia-wise, they could be adorable. They're canonically friends and Romano lived with America for a while. Their differing personalities could bring out positives in each other and benefit each other--I could see Romano helping to ground America, and America's boundless enthusiasm and support being very good for Romano.
