Lacey
The other end went dead as I stood there, stunned. I never thought I would hear Rafe's voice again. The last time I saw him was before my month came to an end with Vincent.
I remember the day that I met Rafe. I didn't know the job he offered was a front for an escort business. I didn't have a proper education to help me avoid pitfalls as I encountered. I came from a broken home and graduated barely.
I lowered my phone and stood there. I felt arms wrap around me from behind me.
"Is something wrong?" Vincent asked, holding me.
"Yes, my past came back to haunt me," I whispered. I didn't want to say it out loud. I worked so hard to forget that part of my life.
Vincent turned me to face him.
"Lacey?" His tone filled with concern.
"Vincent, he's at our beach house," I said, not flinching.
"What?" Vincent questioned.
"Rafe is at the beach house," I replied. Vincent's expression changed to worry. "What?" I asked, wanting to know what bothered Vincent.
"Landon was at the beach house," Vincent admitted.
I felt anger rise in me.
"I don't think Landon is there if Rafe is at the beach house," he assured me.
"But we don't know that. What if Rafe has Landon? I know what Rafe will do," I told Vincent, allowing my anger to show.
I was furious. Vincent looked at me, knowing my anger was palpable.
"Why didn't you tell me where Landon was? You told me that he's okay. How dare you keep our son's location from me?" I spoke through gritted teeth.
"I couldn't tell you, Lacey. The more people know, the easier it is to locate Landon. Our boy is in trouble besides dealing with Rafe," Vincent said.
I looked at Vincent with confusion.
"Landon lost weight," Vincent added.
My heart sank. Oh, god, what if Landon was sick like his father? I remember what happened to Vincent when he went through his treatments.
"I don't know the full extent of why he lost weight, but I know whatever is happening, we will find out," Vincent assured me.
A parent's worst nightmare is knowing their children are sick and not able to help them. When the children were ill growing up, I was there with every cold, flu, and any other issue. Every time one kid got hurt, I took care of it. I didn't want the kids growing up in an environment as I had, and neither did Vincent.
"Lacey, I know you worry about the kids, and so do I, but I gave the two people with Landon a week," Vincent said.
"What two people?" I asked, confused.
"A guy and girl were with Landon. I didn't bother asking their names, but they looked familiar to me," Vincent answered.
I didn't know if I should feel relief or fear.
"Lacey, it will be okay. No one will hurt our boy. What did Rafe want?" Vincent asked calmly.
"He's waiting for me," I answered. I watched Vincent's expression change to anger.
"You will not go to that man," Vincent ordered me, putting his hands on my face. "I refuse to allow anything to happen to you and will kill him if he comes near you or the children," Vincent warned.
