While Landon attended classes, I procured a house that was in desperate need of renovations. The house needed equipping with essentials for any person coming. Cruz and I met with contractors regarding the matter.
The house would allow twelve people to reside with an additional room for an employee to stay and monitor. It would have a community bathroom with several showers inside along with toilets - no doors. There's a spacious kitchen attached to a dining area where the residents would cook and eat. The house includes a meeting room and library. All residents would work and maintain their sobriety.
I was definitely in this decision, as was Landon. We left the house, and Cruz drove me to the rehab center. After we arrived, I got out of the car and walked into the center. I inquired about Lacticia, and the receptionist called her to the front.
I waited as Lacticia walked to the lobby of the center.
"Mr. Powers?" Laticia asked, confused.
"May we speak privately?" I asked.
"Sure," Laticia said, nodding.
We left the center and went outside to speak privately. Lacticia showed me the garden area.
"Mr. Powers, what can I do for you?" She asked.
"I would like to offer you employment with a substantial paycheck, including benefits," I answered, surprising Laticia.
"What's the catch? I'm not a businesswoman. I'm a counselor," Laticia informed me.
"There's no catch. My son will run a halfway house for addicts. I would like you to work with him and help him," I reasoned.
"Why me? There are plenty of people who can help Landon," Laticia informed me.
"Because you exhibit kindness. My wife explained that everyone deserves kindness, even when they don't deserve it. My son came here broken. He struggled, and I ignored it. He met you and learned about himself with your guidance. You offered understanding and compassion. These attributes are admirable qualities to have in a person," I explained.
"Mr. Powers, I didn't offer kindness because my job requires it. I gave it because I learned the right people would be there for you. I fell into the wrong crowd, adopting them as family. When I hit rock bottom, the only person who showed up was my momma. It was at that moment that I knew who the family was," Laticia explained.
"You were lucky. My parents weren't like that. I only had my sister until she passed away. It wasn't until I met my wife that I found my family," I mentioned.
Laticia looked at me and gave me a soft smile.
"Mr. Powers, I accept your offer because of Landon. Your son made an impact on me. He deserves a second chance, and I want to help him achieve it," Laticia responded.
I nodded in agreement.
"Good. Come to my office tomorrow, and I will have the paperwork drafted," I replied.
I left Laticia and went to the car. Cruz looked at me with a smugness.
"Don't give me that look," I ordered.
"What look?" Cruz asked shrugging.
"The look that says I told you so," I replied.
"Well, I did. You allow your stubbornness to get in the way of making good decisions," Cruz retorted.
"You sound like Lacey," I mentioned.
"Because Lacey is a smart woman. We should all strive to be like her more often," Cruz remarked.
