Tension

Landon

Home became tense because of Valeria. My parents were at a loss of what to do with her. Valeria wasn't speaking to Lexie or me. Whatever was happening, I stayed out of it. I had to focus on my sobriety and second chance.

The renovation of the halfway house finished, and Dad had a meeting with everyone regarding it.

"I equipped the house with twelve bedrooms, including one for someone to stay with the residents. There is a full working kitchen, meeting room, and library. Landon will run the house as he sees fit," Dad informed everyone.

"Does that mean your involvement ends?" Asher asked Dad.

"To a point, I will invest in the house, but won't return unless needed. Most funding will come from the state. I will require the residents to work and pay a percentage to the house. We will apply those funds towards necessities and an account for the resident," Dad explained, then let me take the lead.

"This is a halfway house, which means when a person leaves rehab, they come here. We will teach them skills such as cooking, cleaning, going to a job, and managing their finances. We will require the resident to maintain a job, paying a percentage to us for food and utilities, then putting the rest of their money into a savings account. This house is not a country club or vacation. We want to get the person back on their feet in six months," I explained.

"What about meetings?" An employee asked.

"Meetings are mandatory, along with reading. Most addicts become distracted by media and social media. That's why no one will have access to either while they stay here. Our goal is to return people to society without the stigma of addiction," I answered.

My dad left so that I could start running the house. I designated different people for particular jobs. We would receive our first residents next week, thanks to Laticia. She secured an agreement with the rehab center for people to come here.

I couldn't wait. For once, I had something to excite me. Plus, it allowed me to give back and help people.

Later on, Quinn and I had dinner at her place.

"I was thinking about something," Quinn mentioned.

"What's that?" I asked, eating my dinner.

"That you should move in with me," Quinn mentioned.

I stopped eating and looked at Quinn.

"I mean, it would get you out of your parent's house, and you're here most of the time anyway," Quinn added.

I looked at Quinn. I hadn't thought about living together since the time we shared at the beach house. I knew I wanted to move into a place at some point, but I was still saving my money.

"You don't have to give me an answer now. Think about it," Quinn reasoned.

"It's not that. I don't want to decide in haste. That's what led me to use," I reminded Quinn.

Quinn nodded and dropped the subject. When I started using it, I did it because I needed something to keep me awake. I didn't think about the consequences and where it could lead. The money you made from dancing, I blew on drugs, leaving me broke. My dad cut me off so that the money didn't tempt me to return to my lifestyle.

Lexie didn't take the money that our parents put in trust for her. It never meant anything to her. I didn't know if Valeria did or not since we weren't speaking. Any money I made came from the halfway house.

The next day, I was making schedules, and Asher cornered me.

"What's this I heard you turned down Quinn's offer?" Asher asked me.
