Quinn
I went over to Landon's house and picked him up for our date. I'm not sure if that was a great idea, considering his dad asked me a billion questions. I understand his parents worry about him, but I assured them, especially his dad, that Landon would be okay.
Lacey seemed to take control of Vincent, allowing us to escape for our date. We got into the car, and I drove back to my apartment. I figure, having dinner and watching a movie in the comforts of your home is better than going to a public place.
We arrived at my apartment building, and I opened the door. Landon followed me in; then I closed the door behind us.
"Sorry if it's not a luxury place, but it's home," I mentioned, looking around at the mid-size apartment.
"Your apartment is lovely," Landon mentioned, checking out the apartment. He looked at me and smiled. "I like the simplicity of it."
I looked at Landon and smiled. That's what made me fall in love with him. He didn't judge me on my surroundings.
Someone knocked at the door, and I answered it. I paid the delivery person for our food, then closed the door. I carried the bag and pop over to the table and set it down. Then I went and grabbed plates, silverware, and cups from the kitchen.
"I take it that you don't cook a lot," Landon mentioned.
"I work usually. Plus, the last guy that I dated thought it would swell to bring another woman home while I was on an assignment," I replied.
That surprised Landon.
"You don't seem heartbroken about it," Landon said.
We sat down at the table, and I pulled out containers of food.
"You can't be heartbroken when you're not in love with someone. Plus, the guy wasn't you," I mentioned.
*******
LandonI looked at Quinn, speechless. She scooped out food, putting it on her plate as I did the same. After what happened at the masquerade ball, I didn't think Quinn felt the same.
We ate as I thought about things. I wonder if I never went to work at Paradise Club if I would have run into Quinn later? Would I have met someone, settled down, and fell into a life that I didn't want? I didn't know.
"It's interesting," I said.
"What is?" Quinn asked.
"I didn't think I would see you again. After you graduated, I wondered about you," I answered.
"I wanted to do something positive in my life. Joe and Gretchen helped a lot with my decision," Quinn explained.
"Have you talked to your parents since everything that happened?" I asked with curiosity.
"I did once. I wanted to know why. My parents explained that expenses mounted, and they weren't making enough to pay all the bills," Quinn answered.
"Couldn't your parents manage better? Weren't you on scholarship?" I questioned.
"Landon, it's not that simple. When your pay doesn't increase with both people are working and prices increasing, you struggle. I don't condone what my parents did, but I understand it," Quinn informed me.
"Your parents wanted to sell you," I mentioned, feeling angry.
"I know, and that's why I cut contact with them after I saw them. I would have lived in a shelter over my parents resorting to selling me," Quinn told me.
