Summer was so happy when the plane touched down on the tarmac. She hadn't been back in Seattle since last year. She knew home wouldn't be the same, but she was still excited to see Grandma & Serena & she's finally get to meet Miranda. After the plane taxied, the pilot turned off the seatbelt sign & everyone scrambled for the overhead bins for their bags & started to form a line towards the exit. They exited the plane & reached the baggage claim where Nick helped Summer with her bags. Nick rented a car & then he & Summer drove straight to the hospital. The got to drive around the city on the ay towards the suburbs of Washington.
Nick: So this is where you grew up?
Summer: Yeah, good ol' Seattle.
Nick: Is it always this gloomy?
Summer: Yup! But I love it.
They approached the hospital & Summer grabbed her backpack.
Summer: Look, I think it'd be better if I went up by myself.
Nick: No problem, I'll just wait here in the car.
Summer: I'm actually gonna see if I can some the night.
Nick: Ok, I can stay in my car. It's really no problem. Summer: How about you go ahead to your air bnb & I'll let you know when I'm ready for a session this week.
Nick: Yeah, that sounds like a plan.
Summer: Thanks for the drive.
Summer placed her hand on Nick's knee to which she quickly drew back her hand. Nick was caught by surprise, but the feeling of Summer touching him drove him crazy. Nick helped Summer take her bags out of the car, but from there on, Summer was on her own. Summer walked into the hospital with her two bags & she was directed to Serena's room. She quietly entered & Serena was still awake.
Serena: Hey...
Summer: Look at you!
Serena: I look like crap.
Summer: No you don't.
Summer walked over to Serena after setting her bags down. She gave her the biggest hug & they both began to get teary-eyed.
Serena: Summer, I'm so glad you're here.
Summer: I wish I could've been here sooner.
Serena: I'll take what I can get.
They stayed up for hours catching up like sisters do. Before they knew it, they had both passed out in between their exchange of stories. The morning came quickly & the head nurse was making her rounds & happened upon Serena's room. She knocked on the door & Serena woke up. She rubbed her eyes & started to wake Summer up as well. The nurse helped Serena check out. They started with vitals & then gave her the discharge papers & instructions for postpartum care at home. Summer helped gather Serena's things. There was another knock on the door, both girls looked at the door to see Grandma's gray head peek through.
Grandma: Summer?
Summer: Grandma!
Grandma came in to hug her granddaughter & close behind her came Jack.
Grandma: Summer, there's someone I'd like for you to meet.
Grandma held on to Jack's hand like her life depended on it. Summer forced a smile, but didn't like him one bit.
Jack: It is a pleasure!
Summer: Pleasure is all mine.
Jack: Look at all these bags here. Why don't I bring these down to the car, Nora.
Summer & Serena: Nora?
Grandma: Sure, sweetheart. Thank you!
Jack grabbed Summer's bags & slung Serena's bag over his shoulder. He leaned in to kiss Grandma right before he headed out of the room.
Grandma: Isn't he the best? He's so talented & funny. I call him my "Jack of all Trades".
Serena: He's totally whipped. More like "Jack in the Box".
Summer: Ok, I have a ton of questions for you, Nora...
Grandma: Why do you think your middle name is Nora?
Summer: I was named after you?
Grandma: Yes! Ok, so tell me what do you think of him. He's cute isn't he?
Summer: Grandma...
Serena: She's obsessed. I told you.
Summer: I don't like him, Grandma.
Grandma: What? You just met him. Give him a chance.
Summer: No, he can't just swoop in & become Grandpa in a day.
Grandma: You're being unfair here.
Summer: Am I? I had to fly in just to make sure someone was caring for Serena.
Grandma: Excuse me?
Summer: No one was here for her. At least that's how she felt.
Grandma: Serena, is this true?
Serena quietly nodded.
Grandma: I'm sorry honey. I didn't know you felt this way.
Serena: It's just that... I expected you to be here for me. You weren't there for Miranda's birth like we had planned. You weren't there when the doctor told me that Miranda has to stay here for 2 more weeks. You just weren't there.
Grandma: I'm sorry, Serena. Meeting Jack just came at a wrong time. You girls have to know that I haven't been this happy in a long time. Summer, your grandpa passed a long time ago & this is the very first time I've opened my heart to someone.
Summer could tell her Grandma was speaking the truth. She felt bad that they had guilt tripped her. Grandma was in love.
Grandma: Don't I deserve some happiness?
Serena & Summer looked at each other & then non-verbally agreed that Grandma did deserve happiness. Summer hugged Grandma.
Summer: Ok, but we have to make a deal.
Grandma: Fine.
Summer: No boys allowed during our Harper girls' nights.
Grandma: It's a deal.
After a dramatic fight's end & a consoling conclusion to how everyone felt about Jack, there was another knock on the door.
Jack: Look who I bumped into...
Doctor Welling: Hey everyone. We actually have some good news.
Serena: Hi Doctor, what's the good news?
Doctor Welling: Miranda can go home in the next few days.
Serena's eyes welled up with tears. Summer went to go hug her.
Serena: Thank you, Doctor. That really makes my day.
Doctor Welling: Well, I'm glad. Miranda's weight has been stabilized. Her breathing is stabilized. She's right on track. By the way, how do you all know my dad?
Grandma, Summer, Serena: Dad?!
