Water. Earth. Fire. Air. My father used to tell me stories about the old days: a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements; only he could stop the ruthless firebenders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years have passed, and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the war. Some people lost hope in the Avatar, others like myself haven't. I believe, no. I know somehow that the Avatar will save the world.

Life as the governors daughter is very stressful in Kyoshi Island. Of course it has it's perks, helping people who are in need, being at my dads side when he needed any ideas to improve the village and helping with the village events. But honestly I felt tired of doing the same old same old.

"Amaya, Amaya, wake up,"  I groaned as I rolled out of the futon bed , meeting my older step sister Suki. Suki and I were best friends, even though we fight like cat rats, she was always there for me, and she's always given me tough love when I needed it too.

"Mom says to get ready and do the morning errands," she said her arms folded wearing her Kyoshi warrior uniform.

"But I did them last time can't you do it?" I asked.

"Sorry Maya, I got patrolling to do." Suki said folding her arms, "But I'll  promise, I'll make it up to you,"

"Pinky promise?"

"Pinky promise," she replied. We both wrapped our pinkies in agreement and I got ready and went downstairs meeting my mother preparing the days meal.

"Oh I see that you're up," she said smiling,

"Barley," I replied with a yawn, "What do you want me to do anyway ?"

"I want you to get some provisions, I made a list right on the tatami table. I would send you to Mr. Fukuyama's garden near by, but at his age he could barely walk," Mom muttered, contemplating.

"So where do you want me to go then? " I questioned.

"Well, I want you to go to the village garden right across from the shoreline,"

"But that's two miles away," I protested, "And it would take longer if I use the path,"

"Amaya, I don't have time for bargaining, do as I say," Mom replied, as she begins to chop some turnips.

I sighed in defeat. "Yes mama,"  She gave me a basket and the list, and I started on my journey. The sun was beating heavily but I couldn't feel it due to the cold crisp air.  Finally I saw the garden, I greeted the village gardeners and gave them the list and the basket which in turn, gave back.

Bay leaf leaves, two sour sops, four sweet potatoes,  and some lychee berries, I took the basket and headed straight for home. I usually take the long path that overlooked the shore line, and some times I would sneak there to practice my water bending.  My mother and I are both water benders, but my mom suddenly stopped her bending to become the governors wife. My father met my mother when she first arrived to Kyoshi Island she said long ago. She said she escaped from the southern water tribe during a fire nation raid, and was found by my father on the shore. She, along with my older brother were very weak due to being on the sea with very little food and water. My father fell in love with my mother, and when she was well enough, he married her. It was very uncommon at the time for people to intermarry, especially from different nations.  My thoughts wondered on the fire nation, how they almost have the whole world in their clutches, and on top of that, they could be on our shores any day now. I clutched the basket in anger. I hated the experience of war, even though we were never touched by the fire nation. We've heard stories from visiting fishermen about how they've conquered various cities and villages for their own. Suddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by waves crashing.  I looked up towards the ocean and see elephant koi bobbing in and out of the water. I looked down, as I continued on my journey. Suddenly something caught my eye, a young boy riding an elephant koi in the water.
