We settled in the barn next to Haru's house,
"My mom said you can sleep here tonight. " Haru said, "But you should leave in the morning."
"Thanks. I'll make sure Appa doesn't eat all your hay." Aang said. I began to unpack the small necessities that I had. But I couldn't shake the feeling of what had transpired earlier. I went outside to clear my head when suddenly I bumped into Haru spilling some water on the ground.
"Sorry!" he said, "I should've looked to where I was going."
"No, no it's okay." I said as I bended the water from the ground and back into the bucket.
"You're a waterbender?"
"I am,"
"But you're from the Earth Kingdom. Kyoshi Island isn't it."
"Yes, but my mother is from the Norther Water tribe, so I'm biracial."
Haru and I walked together along a small path away from Haru's house, "I'm sorry for what my friend said earlier, we didn't know about your father," I said sympathetically,
"That's okay." Haru said with a smile "It's funny, the way she was talking back in the store? It reminded me of him."
"Really how so?" I asked, " My father was very courageous." Haru explained "When the Fire Nation invaded, he and the other earthbenders were outnumbered ten to one. But they fought back anyway."
"Your father sounds a lot like my sister," I said.
"Really? What's her name? " Haru asked.
"Suki. You know, she's the leader of the Kyoshi warriors back home in Kyoshi Island, you'll be amazed at what they can do" I laughed softly trying to lighten the mood and turned only to see Haru's melancholic gaze in the distance. I stopped and cleared my throat, "So that's why you hide your earthbending,"
"Yeah. Problem is" Haru said as he earthbends two stones in a circle above his hand, "The only way I can feel close to my father now, " Haru crushes the stones to sand with his hands. "When I practice my bending. He taught me everything I know,"
"You see this necklace? " I asked him showing the blue beaded chocker necklace with two sets of teeth on each side with a charm that shows the insignia of the moon, "This was my older sisters necklace,"
"It's beautiful," said Haru
"I never really met my sister, but my mom said she looked exactly like me,"
"What happened to her?" he asked, "She was killed in a Fire Nation raid in the South Pole. And this necklace is all I have left of her,"
"But it's not enough is it?" Haru asked, "No," I said as I hung my head and turned away. A few minutes later Katara joined us and talked some more about the fire nation, I learned that Katara too lost her mother in a fire nation raid, and we all comforted each other. I needed this, the warmth of a new friend and a friend I've already met. While we were walking home a loud boom sounds and rock and dust blasts from a distant mine entrance.
HELP!!!! HELP!!!!!
"The mine!" Haru said pointing to a nearby mine, we ran as fast as we could to the entrance of the mines, which has caved in and left a tremendous pile of rocks pinning the old man to the ground on his stomach.
"Help me," cried the old man, Katara and I tried to pull the old man free, but he wouldn't budge
"Ugh! It's not working!" Katara said pull the old man's left arm" We have to get help!"
"There's no time, pull harder!" Haru said, as he pulled his right arm and I pull his stomach, "Maybe there's another way," I suggested, Haru hesitated, " I can't."
"Please, there's no one around to see you. " Katara begged, "It's the only way!" Haru leaps away from the falling debris, spinning back to face it as he assumes an earthbending form. With a sudden and strong move, he blasts all the rocks down the tunnel, freeing the old man.
"Haru! You did it!" Katara said, "I've always knew you would," I said with a smile.
