We entered a passage and descend some steps into the cave. Shyu the sage enters behind us and closes the passageway. "Avatar Roku once called this temple his home. He formed these secret passages out of the magma," he informed us.

"Did you know Avatar Roku?" Aang asked,

" No. But my grandfather knew him. Many generations of Fire Sages guarded this Fire Temple long before me. We all have a strong spiritual connection to this place," Shyu said.

"Is that how you knew I was coming?" Aang asked.

"A few weeks ago, an amazing thing occurred. The statue of Avatar Roku; its eyes began to glow!" "That's when we were at the Air Temple. Avatar Roku's eyes were glowing there, too!" then it clicked,

Flash back a few week ago, back at Kyoshi Island.

That was the day when the governors family went Kyoshi's temple, to change the incense.  It was costumed that the incense must be changed every new moon or the island would lose protection and bad luck would reign for a year. While the sage placed the new set of incense before the statue's eyes began to glow startling us while the head sage bowed to the ground, "At that moment, we knew you had returned to the world," Shyu continued.

"If this is the Avatar's temple, why did the sages attack me?" questioned Aang.

"Things have changed. In the past, the sages were loyal only to the Avatar. When Roku died, the sages eagerly awaited for the next Avatar to return. But he never came,"

"I get it now," I said folding one arm and with the other hand on my chin, "Basically when the next Avatar didn't come they gave up and abandoned the Avatar,"

 "Precisely," Shyu confirmed.

" They were waiting for me," Aang said looking down in shame,

"Hey don't feel bad. You're only a hundred years late!" said Sokka,

"Hey Sokka, I know that you're trying to lighten the mood, but now isn't the time," I said as Aang scowls at him.

"They lost hope the Avatar would ever return. When Fire Lord Sozin began the War, my grandfather and the other sages were forced to follow him," Shyu shook his head in frustration, "I never wanted to serve the Fire Lord. When I learned you were coming, I knew I would have to betray the other sages,"

"Thank you for helping me," Aang said, Shyu smiled. We made it to the second level of the temple. " We'll follow these stairs to the sanctuary," said Shyu as we started to climb the steps, "Once you're inside, wait for the light to hit Avatar Roku's statue. Only then will you be able to speak with him,"

We finally made to the outer sanctuary, " No!" Shyu said as he gasps,

"Shyu, what's wrong?" Aang asked,

" The sanctuary doors, they're closed!" Shyu said pointing to the door, I examined the door while Aang tugs at the door uselessly,

"Can't you just open them with firebending? Like you opened that other door? "Katara asked,

"No. Only a fully realized Avatar is powerful enough to open this door alone. Otherwise, the sages must open this door together, with five simultaneous fire blasts," Shyu said,

" Five fire blasts, huh? I think I can help you out," Sokka said.

"What's you're plan," I asked,

"Give me a sec," Sokka said as he rushed over and got some bags and some oil from the lamps close by,  "This is a little trick I picked up from my father. I seal the lamp oil inside an animal skin casing, Shyu lights the oil soaked twine and, ta-da! Fake firebending!" Sokka said as he picks up bag and holds it proudly before him.
