despite his young age, duck is a very smart little boy, taehyung notices. he's back to babysitting the little kid who still refuses to tell him his real name, so he's simply duck. seokjin hyung isn't really his older brother, the male had found the little boy in the midst of chaos. he was small enough (and smart enough) to hide in a lower cupboard in his home when the outbreak got out of control. luckily, he had been found by the scavenger group that seokjin had been part of before he found refuge in the apartment buildings that taehyung and jeon had been at.
"swings," duck points at the playground that was not too far from the neighborhood.
taehyung picks him up and rests him on his hip, "okay ducky, just for a little bit ok?"
with a small nod, the duo begin their walk towards the abandoned playground. it was still inside the walls, though a patch was merely wire fence. there were no undead around the area, so taehyung let the little one back down and watches as he makes a run to the sand filled pit.
taking a seat on a bench close enough, taehyung smiles as duck grabs the toys that had been left and begins to play with them, completely forgetting about the swings. "duck thirsty, hyungie," the smaller whines at taehyung, pointing to the water fountain that was at the end of the area, closer to the fence.
"ok, let's go."
as the duo walk towards the fountain, taehyung doesn't see the horrifying creature that has been watching them from a nearby spot that's slowly making its way to them. taehyung picks duck up by his underarms and leans against the fountain to activate it. the water runs, and duck gets a messy gulp in. taehyung wipes at his mouth and smiles at him, setting him back down.
as taehyung gets ready to take his own swig of water, duck screams in terror as the creature lunges itself towards them. taehyung grabs duck and pushes him backwards, stumbling on his feet and ultimately falling down. the creature gnaws at the wire fence, hands wanting to grab at them so badly. it sounds like an animal, the way it growls in frustration at not being able to eat them.
but taehyung grows too confident and doesn't see that the fence is giving up which each push of the ravenous zombie. "let's go duck, don't look at it."
and then the fence breaks and the creature is tumbling inside the safe perimeter. taehyung freezes, his body doesn't want to move despite the chaos that's in his mind as he holds on to duck who's now crying loudly.
can't no one hear? is no one watching? taehyung finally comes to his senses when the creature stands up and charges at them. taehyung climbs up the playgrounds deck, climbing up further into the tower. the monster is on his tail, so he squeezes duck at the top of the tower and jumps off the play area.
taehyung grabs the knife that's strapped to his thigh and takes it out. it's pathetic, he doesn't even know how to use the weapon. he's never fought a person let alone a zombified one. "help!" he yells as loud as he can, and his panic intensifies as duck wails loudly from the playground.
the blow to the ground knocks the air out of him as the creature attempts to rip his flesh apart. he's using all the strength he has to push at the monster. he yells for help again, but no help comes his way. god please not like this, let me save duck.
he doesn't know where in the hell he finds the strength to drive the knife into the head of the monster, blood spluttering over his face and landing in his mouth as the creature falls limp on him. taehyung gasps in shock, quickly standing up, dropping the knife, and running to collect duck in his arms.
"help!" he yells out as he starts sprinting down the street, "it got in!"
the few people that are now outside run to aid taehyung. "what happened?" someone asks. "the fence fell."
seokjin runs out of a house and goes to taehyung's aid. "are you two ok?"
"i'm ok, but he's scared out of his mind," duck goes to his hyung's arms and sobs into his chest. the older hums at the little one and takes him back inside. taehyung watches as a group heads towards the fallen fence, killing whatever creature decides to step through.
"tae! what happened?" claudia.
the girl looks like she just got out of bed, but judging by the male that follows who's shirtless, taehyung doubts they were sleeping. "it broke the fence by the playground, i was there with duck," his voice comes out shaky and he doesn't realize how much he's shaking until claudia takes his hand and gives him a hug.
"it's ok tae, you're both safe."
yeah.
a sick part of him wishes someone else was giving him this comforting hug.
