Dahyun and I frequently spent our free time exploring the many cute cafés and restaurants around Busan. Without university classes and other responsibilities consuming our time, we could focus on our goal of finding the best coffee in the city. Mingi and Yunho weren't happy that I would leave so often, but we were always careful to hide our identities by wearing face masks and keeping an eye out for police officers.
Today we had decided on a dog café that was situated a few blocks away from the beach. It was a bit of a walk to get there, but the sun was shinning brightly and I figured that doing some exercise for once wouldn't kill me. I slid on jean shorts and one of Yunho's hoodies, before meeting my best friend at the front door to go on our daily adventure. She greeted me impatiently, "It's almost noon, what took you so long?"
"Sorry, I slept in," I explained apologetically, thinking back to how hard it was to pull myself out of Yunho's bed, "I'll set an alarm next time."
We started out down the street, heading towards the coffee shop, while chatting about the future.
"So now that everything's settling down," Dahyun started, "What do you want to do?"
"I don't know," I answered honestly. I had considered that I couldn't return to school or stay in Korea, but I hadn't brought it up with Yunho or Mingi yet, worried that it would make our relationship that much more complicated. "All I know is that I want to stay with Yunho and Mingi, wherever that may be. What are you thinking?"
She considered for a moment. "Well, we should probably leave the country so we aren't running and hiding from the cops. You spoke so well of the United States, would it be a good idea to go there?"
"Yeah that's not a bad idea. Let's talk to everyone about it tonight, I wouldn't mind if they all came along." I thought out loud.
She raised an eyebrow at me. "Even Jongho?"
"Even Jongho," I laughed.
As I continued walking, it took me a moment to realize that Dahyun had disappeared from my side. I spun around to find Dahyun hunched over on the sidewalk behind me, holding her stomach, her face scrunched up in discomfort. I hurried back over to her.
"Are you okay?" I asked in a worried tone, as I held her arm, "What's wrong?"
"It's nothing, just cramps," She replied, exhaling before straightening herself back up. "I just got my period yesterday, and my cramps are super bad because of all the unhealthy foods that I've been eating recently."
"Oh, that'll do it," I reached back into my tote bag to pull out a small bottle of Ibuprofen. "Here, this will help," I said, handing her one of the pills. I always carried emergency supplies in my bag for these kinds of situations.
"Thanks mom," She smiled weakly before taking the pill down in one quick gulp. "Our cycles are usually in sync right? Do you have your period as well?"
"No, I think I missed it this month." I explained casually.
This time I noticed a little sooner that she had halted in the middle of the sidewalk, but the cause was no longer her cramps. Instead, her mouth hung open in shock, "Y/N..."
"What?"
"You missed a period?" Her eyes were filled with concern, as she quietly continued, "Y/N... could you be pregnant?"
"What? No way," I laughed it off, urging her to stop being so dramatic. "It's just stress. I always miss my period when I'm really stressed."
"But you're having sex, aren't you?" She inquired further, already knowing full well that I was. "So, it's a possibility?"
"No, it's not," I sighed. I hated talking about it but I guess I had to explain myself. "Dahyun, I can't get pregnant. A few years back, I went to the doctor for a regular checkup, and I found out that I have an abnormally-shaped uterus, that would make it almost impossible for any of my eggs to get fertilized. She told me that the chances were like one in a million."
"Wow... I didn't know," Dahyun practically whispered, "I'm sorry for bringing it up."
"It's okay, it just makes me a bit sad to think about." I exhaled, starting to walk once again.
I could see her thinking as she matched my strides silently. Suddenly, her voice piped up again, "Okay but I think you should still do a test. You said there's a chance, right?"
"The chance is one in a million," I explained, "It's pretty much impossible."
"Still..." She calmly continued, "Look, we'll go to the café, but afterwards we'll stop by the pharmacy and pick up a test. It doesn't hurt to just do it to make sure."
"Fine," I conceded bitterly.
-
That was how, later that day, I found myself sitting in the bathroom peeing on a stick. In my head, I knew that the test would be negative, but on our way home from the pharmacy, my mind began to run with all sorts of questions and scenarios. I tried to ignore them but they flooded through uncensored.
I placed the test to the side and began to wait the three minutes. Dahyun was nervously sitting on the other side of the door. I knew full well that she was already looking up pregnancy information on her phone. I was frustrated that she had even let me consider this, now I couldn't get the idea out of my head.
Interrupted by my phone's timer going off, marking the end of the three minutes, I felt my heart pounding. I didn't want to look at it, knowing both results would make me upset. If it was negative, it would be another reminder of my infertility, and if, for some reason, the test came up positive... well that would be a whole new problem in and of itself.
Instead of checking the test, I opened the door to let in an equally anxious Dahyun who was pacing around outside.
"Can you check it?" I asked in a shaky voice, "I just don't think I can."
"Okay sure," she replied, stepping inside to where the test was sitting on the countertop. Her eyes focused down onto the stick, as she read the result. My heart rate accelerated as her face went blank, giving me zero indication of the result.
"Well?" I asked impatiently.
"Y/N..." She started, looking at me with big eyes. "It's..."
I couldn't take the suspense. I shuffled over and peered down at the test myself. I stared down at the small pink plus symbol was clearly displayed on the little screen. My mouth dropped open, as I turned to look at my best friend.
"Y/N you're pregnant."

Sorry this chapter was a day late. I could make up an excuse but honestly, I just didn't feel like finishing writing it yesterday. Instead I watched season 4 of Money Heist. c:
