Kim Hongjoong.
I never expected to be staring at the dainty features of this demonic man ever again. His face was plastered with his characteristic arrogant smirk that always made my stomach churn.
What the hell was he doing here?
Jongho was the first to break our communal silence. He stepped towards Hongjoong, as if to protect us from whatever the shorter man had planned.
"I thought I told you what would happen if I ever saw you again," the youngest barked, "What do you think you're doing?"
"What? I can't just let you all leave before I could say goodbye." Hongjoong snickered. "Turns out I'm not that good at letting things go. I can't have people disrespecting me and getting away with it. What would that do to my image?"
I laughed back at him, stepping forward as well. "You're too late. Our flight is boarding any minute now and we'll be gone for good."
"Well maybe I can't stop you on my own," Hongjoong replied confidently, "but I know some police officers that can. And Mingi here was so kind as to lead us directly to you."
Mingi's eyes shot up immediately, "You were following me?"
"What? You didn't notice the cop cars parked outside of your hotel as you stumbled home drunk every night?" Hongjoong laughed mockingly. "Not a big surprise."
"You idiot," Jongho spat, "Don't you know that you'll go to prison too?"
"Well it turns out that the police will reduce your sentence if you give them information that they want," he explained smugly, "I'll only have six months after you all get arrested. As for you, well let's just say that Y/N here will be having a prison baby."
"You snitch!" I yelled, clutching my stomach, as I boiled with fury. He would take six months in prison? And for what? Revenge?
As Hongjoong had been explaining his plan, Yunho had tightened a strong grip on my hand. He was no longer focused on the former leader's words, but more so on the group of police officers making their way down the terminal towards us, just as the intercom buzzed: "Flight A178-4 will now be boarding."
"Oh shit, they're already here," Yunho mumbled. He tried to think quickly of a way that they could get away, but it seemed hopeless. Once the police officers reached the plane, they could easily stop it from taking off and arrest them. Alternatively, if they ran, the security in the airport was so diligent that there would be no possible way out.
"Go, get on the plane," Mingi announced to us, loosening his grip from his carry-on bag and facing the ever-approaching officers, "I'll take care of it."
"What are you going to do?" I asked him nervously.
"I'll distract them long enough for the plane to take off..."
"You can't!" I urged him, grabbing onto his arm, "They'll arrest you, Mingi!"
He turned a face me with worried eyes, "It's better than you getting arrested, Y/N." Then he turned to a shocked Yunho, "You take care of her, okay?"
Yunho didn't quite know how to respond, opting to nod hesitantly. Tears welled up in my eyes as Mingi struggled out of my grip, backing away but never breaking eye contact.
"I love you, Y/N, don't ever forget it." He said quietly.
"Mingi, no..." I responded, my voice audibly catching in my throat.
Feeling content with his final goodbye, he suddenly turned away and took off running towards the group of police officers. I could feel Yunho urging me to board the plane, but I couldn't help but watch as Mingi caught the officers' attention, and veered them away from us, just as he had planned. But as he sprinted out of sight, I knew well that he couldn't outrun them forever.
"No!" Hongjoong fussed. "You won't get away. I'll tell them to stop the plane from taking off."
Before he could get another word in, Jongho appeared behind the smaller man and pinched his neck in a bizarre way to make him instantly pass out. Jongho cautiously dragged him onto one of the terminal chairs, without drawing attention, to make Hongjoong look as though he had simply fallen asleep waiting for his flight.
"Come on, let's go before the police come back." Jongho huffed, leading the others towards the gate.
"But w-wait..." I stuttered, "We have to help Mingi."
Yunho pulled me towards him sternly. "Y/N, we have to go now. We can't help Mingi, but he wanted us to escape, so please. We need to board the flight." I allowed the pleading man to lead me towards the gate. I felt numb as I handed the flight attendant my fake passport, and although the urgency of the situation didn't escape me, all I wanted to do was turn back.
I sat down at my window seat and stared down at the tarmac below, as guilt surged through me. I hoped that he had been able to evade them, but knew deep down that there was no way that he could have gotten through security undetected.
I barely noticed as the plane began to move down the runway, my mind only focused on a single thought.
He saved our lives and I didn't even get the chance to tell him that I still loved him too.
