Through the day, Rain and River played some songs for me. I thought they were good and all, but I don't listen to their genre.
"You guys are so talented!" I complimented. They just both smiled simultaneously and looked at each other.
River's mother came down stairs and asked how we were doing. "You guys want any dinner? Hopefully you're staying for dinner Christine," She suggested.
"Sure, if its no problem," I happily consented and she nodded.
"So what are you guys up for?" She asked again.
Rain nor River said anything so I thought of an idea. "Hamburgers?"
The room went dead silent. It was a horrible feeling, just waiting for someone to say something. I looked over to River, who was acting busy with his guitar.
I glanced away from the embarrassment, hoping anxiously that someone would say something, but no one did. Nervously, I looked over to Mickey, who was still sound asleep.
Finally, Rain let out a chuckle and queued everyone else to laugh. I joined in, acting like it was a joke. "We're strict vegetarians," Rain said sternly. At this moment I knew that I just ruined my whole Phoenix family friendship.
"Oh, I had no idea... I'm so sorry." My cheeks were red as tomatoes and I tried my best to hide them.
"Oh Hun, don't worry. Really, it's fine. You didn't know, but now you do. We suspected River must've told you," River's mother said. Well, he didn't. I thought over my words, wishing I could've gone back in time to take back what I said.
"Anyone up for some salad?" She asked. Everyone nodded. "Salad it is," she smiled and walked back up the stairs.
"Risky, risky move, Chris," Rain huffed. I took in a deep breath and sighed, knowing I will forever be awkward in this house.
"I know, why didn't you guys tell me?" I felt bad blaming it on them. Rain pointed at River, "Ask him."
River shrugged and apologized. "It's fine. I hope your mom doesn't hate me though." I sighed. Rain let out a giggle and stood her guitar back in the corner.
"Don't worry, really. You're thinking about it too much." She chuckled as she laid back on the couch.
"You're right," I agreed.
In a few minutes, River's mom came down and gave us some dinner. I thanked her and she left us to talk. After I few seconds everything came rushing into my head, and I didn't even realize that I haven't thought about Wil at all this whole time. I was happy though because I was having too much fun right now and I don't want to be distracted by the thought of him.
"So, what's up with you guys, how'd you meet again? She ran you over with her bike?" Rain asked while pulling on her vintage-textured dress. River and I looked over at each other and stared for a few seconds until he started playing Blackbird on the guitar. I guess that means I had to answer it.
"Yeah, pretty much on point," I laughed. Rain let out a soft giggle and looked over to her brother.
"He's a bit of a casanova with the ladies," she joked while patting him on the back. I giggled gently, fuming with suppressed jealousy and watched his cheeks go pink.
Mickey pushed himself off the bed and sat next to me. "Can we go home, Chrissy?" He asked, all lightheaded. I ruffled up his hair and nodded. It was 7:23 pm.
"Well, that's my queue, I best be going but, really I had a lot of fun." I hugged Rain first and smiled. "It was nice spending time with you," I added.
"Ditto." She smirked. She took a step back and nudged River on his shoulder. "Notice how she said that to me instead of you?" She giggled to herself and pushed River to me.
I went in for a hug but he turned around to tell Rain something. I played it off as if I were stretching. "We'll be home shortly Mickey," I grinned at him.
I walked up the stairs to the door, hoping River followed me, and he did. I turned around to finally give him that hug but I didn't know he was so close to me. "Don't worry, ha, I'll be in the car," He smirked coyly and I followed him outside.
"We should really do this again, it was fun," I said. "Your family is so sweet and welcoming."
"Definitely, it was my pleasure." He looked out to the flowers and we watched the sun go down slowly. I liked these moments, when we were together, enjoying each other's company. His mom came out with her car keys and I knew the moment was over.
Through the car ride, they stayed silent, I'm not sure why because they usually always have something to talk about. But I liked the silence, breathing in the Phoenix family air.
As we finally approached my house, my stomach churned. Flashing lights were surrounding the whole house, including my neighbors. Something had gone horribly wrong.
