Okay, so...I know I said I'd put up pictures of everyone with their mates as we go, and that's not a character in this story. BUT this is another character of mine - she's very loved - and she's the leading lady in The Huntress. The light blue top is the bodice for the dress that you see. A story based in the land of fairy tales. It needs your support in the Wattys and I believe some of you may enjoy it.

Yes, that was some uncharacteristic promotion on my part to read something else of mine. Am I ashamed at asking you this? Not really. I hope you continue to enjoy this story and will like it enough to read some other stuff of mine.
Now I'm going to stop advertising, because it feels weird. A/N at the bottom

We sit in tense silence as we wait for Jase and the others to answer our call. Of course, one thing keeps messing with my brain. Trey told me that Ian was supposed to be with Jase and Rhys, so how did he end up unconscious on the floor? Also, why is there a Wendigo here? And, more importantly, how many are there?

“I was on my way back to take a shower.” Trey bursts out suddenly. “When you called for Ian, I was headed this way to clean up after the long day…he was supposed to be hanging with the guys for a while. When I heard him come in, I didn’t bother to say anything…because it was just him. And then I got in and…everything just happened so fast -”

“It’s okay, man, I’ll take it from here.” Ian says gently, patting Trey’s shoulder as he starts to shake slightly with anxious energy. “There was a knock on the door. When I heard the water start I figured it wasn’t for him…or just some cheerleader’s bad timing. When I opened the door, I didn’t get what I was expecting. I-I thought he may have been one of our classmates. When I asked what he wanted, he rushed at me…and I tried to fight back, but it wasn’t enough. Before I knew it, he’d overpowered me and then I woke up to find you in trouble. I was so scared.”

I nod at him with a small smile, knowing what he feels like – I’d been scared too when I saw him lying there, unconscious. Thinking about one of my pack dead…it kills me. They’re my brothers – literally. We’ve bled together, sweated together…cried together. I can’t linger on the pain – he wouldn’t want that for me. At least, not until we’ve dealt with Fenris and his pack.

“And it attacked you while you were in the bathroom?” I look over to Trey – he almost looks lost as he stares blankly at his shaking hands.

I slowly reach out and take his hand in my own, giving a reassuring squeeze to show him he’s not alone. “It’s okay, he’s gone.”

He looks into my eyes and nods once. “I know, but I just keep thinking about Selene. If something had happened to me, what would she do? She’s not like us, but it could very well kill her…we’ve already completed the mating and – and -”

“I get it.” I say, holding back the threatening tears as his voice cracks and absentmindedly fiddling with my mother’s necklace in one hand while also squeezing his hand slightly. “But you’re still here and that’s all that matters right now.”

He nods, a single tear slipping down his face, and sighs as a soft knock comes from the door before quickly wiping the intrusive moisture away. I take a small breath, catching the scents of the others, and make my way to the door. I smile at the confused looks on all of their faces before motioning them in. My face falls slightly at the person standing at the door – the cheek bones, dark hair, enchanting eyes, all of him. His slow-forming smile brings tears to my eyes and the beating of my heart pounds in my ears as I let myself feel the relief of seeing his face again. I take a step forward, making the mistake of blinking and Derreck’s gone again…leaving me empty inside. I shut my eyes tightly to shove the pain away – it was all just my imagination.
