The stone floor was cold against your feet as you padded down the dormitory hallways. Your eyes hadn't quite adjusted to the darkness yet, so you took your time searching every crevice. Your fingertips brushed against every surface, praying for something. Your room was completely torn apart, every inch of it ripped away from your panic.

Next, you checked the library.

The one candle that stayed lit on the table for late-night studyers illuminated one table, helping you in your search. Every book in the library had been neatly tucked away for the night. You hadn't even been in the library during the day, so it certainly wasn't here. But it never hurt to check, so you grabbed the candle and walked around.

You finished searching the second floor of the library and turned around to place the candle back on its table. A figure stood in the doorway, its shadow large and menacing. Cursing a little louder than needed, you jumped back, tripping over your feet and falling onto the floor. The candle fell with you, the crash making the flame extinguish and plummeting you into darkness.

The figure began to walk towards you slowly and you put your hands out in front of your face to shield yourself from a potential attack. It kept coming closer and closer, despite your desperate attempts to tell it to stop. You could've sworn this was your end and chided yourself for being out after curfew. Especially with rumors of a traitor amidst the Monastery.

Finally, the figure laughed. "Gosh, Y/N, I never thought you'd be such a scaredy cat."

Your heart stopped pounding, screeching to a stop like a horse that refused to make a jump. You figuratively were flung across the front of the saddle. You stood up and angrily picked up the candle. "Ferdinand! You ass!"

"Sorry, sorry. Are you alright?

Your eyes adjusted in the dark to see him in his nightshirt...

...and boxers.

You looked back up, thankful that it was dark so he couldn't see your red face.

"What are you doing up? And where are your pants? No, it doesn't matter. I need to go." You tried to push past him, but he didn't let you, blocking your path no matter which way you tried to go.

"I could ask you the same thing. Not the pants question, I mean. Why are you in such a hurry?"

"I just- I need something." You said sharply.

"Like?"

"My diary! I can't find it anywhere. I opened my drawer to write in it and it wasn't there!"

Ferdinand hummed, seemingly amused. "Well, in any case, you can find it in the morning. You need to go to bed. We have a quiz tomorrow, you know."

You shook your head and pushed past him successfully, but he grabbed onto your wrist. Overcome with some kind of superhuman strength, you ignored it and continued to pull him down through the Monastery, checking the Officer's Academy and the courtyards already.

"Y/N, please, it's past midnight. You need sleep." Ferdinand's voice bordered on begging, but you couldn't care less.

"No! I need my diary. What if someone reads it?"

"What is there to read? Do you write about your secret crush or something?"

You didn't answer, and in the moonlight, Ferdinand could see your cheeks burning and your eyebrows furrowed. He grinned.

"You do! Who is it? A proper gentleman, I hope, and not some hooligan crush." he joked.

"It's no one. And he is a gentleman, thank you very much. Much more than what you're being right now."

"No one, my ass. If he's so much better than me, then why won't you tell me? If he's soooo much better, then I shouldn't even be on his level to tell him about your crush. What makes him so much better than me?" Ferdinand began to ramble, feeling defensive.

You rolled your eyes. "You pompous ass. I'm sure there are plenty of people in the world who are better than you. Certainly more humble."

"Humble? Why be humble when everyone can marvel at you? If you're good, then you need to own it." He followed you to the dining hall, "and you'll never be as good if you don't get proper sleep-"

"Found it! I left it here at dinner, I guess!" You interrupted him.

Ferdinand walked over to you and suddenly snatched the book out of your hands. You yelled out and reached for it, but Ferdinand was able to block you from grabbing it.

Stupid defense knights.

He flipped the pages and began reading out loud.

"Oh, how I dread going into the classroom each day because every time I see him, it feels as if my heart is getting ready to combust! His hair, his eyes, him. He's gorgeous, but alas a noble. I'm just a commoner, such a relationship could be frowned upon."

Your eyes widened. The passage he was reading had the name of your interest in it. You fought harder to grab the diary, but he continued to swat you away, reading further in one of the most dramatic voices possible. You would've laughed if you weren't too busy trying to prevent him from reading--

"Sometimes I give myself his last name, just to hear how it sounds. Ferdinand and Y/N von Aegir. It sounds lovely. But I sound like a child. he'd never feel the same- wait."

You had stopped fighting him and were near the dining hall door, getting ready to leave. The embarrassment was too much to endure. You'd rather disappear than have to hear his reply.

Suddenly, a hand grabbed your shoulder and turned you around. Arms then wrapped around your waist and a chin laid upon your shoulder.

"You're not going to make fun of me?" Your voice trembled.

"No- no, of course not," he whispered back, "I just can't believe it. You- you actually like me back."

"Back?" You pull away from him slightly.

Ferdinand only nods and smiles, looking into your eyes lovingly. "I mean, how could you not like someone like me?"

"Get off your high horse, Ferdie. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

"How is it a once-in-a-lifetime thing? Especially when if you're telling the truth, you will be the rest of my life." He grabs your hand and begins to gently drag you out of the dining hall, taking the stairs up to the second floor of the dormitory.

"Whoa- wait- my dorm is on the first floor, you passed it."

"Silly, we're going to mine. It's very late and I'm quite cold after you dragged me across the Monastery in the middle of the night, so I need to be warm and you need to rest."
