Pulling up to the bar, Christian pulls out his phone to wrap up the Uber transaction before we give the driver a quick thanks and get out of the car. "Carly is annoyed we're late, but she did stop messaging me about ten minutes ago... Hopefully that means Cody is there and things are going well."
"Or she's scared him off," Christian teases; both of us know Carly likes to play the hard-to-get angle. "With the two of you though, probably good they at least got a couple of minutes alone."
"What's that supposed to mean?" I ask, joking, knowing exactly what he's implying. Carly and I haven't seen each other in almost six months; they'll be lucky to get any meaningful attention once we're together.
Holding the door for me, I sit to the side to let Christian lead the way to the bar. Cody being six-three makes him pretty easy to spot once we've made our way through some of the crowd. He's at least laughing when I notice him; Carly can't be doing too much yet.
Carly spots us first, almost squealing as she hops off the barstool and rushes over to hug me tightly. "It's been too damn long."
"I know," I confirm, hugging her just as tight back. We sway with our embrace, not wanting to let the other go. We will be with each other at the absolute latest a month from now, but that doesn't matter right now. "You being nice?"
"What, me?" Carly asks, breaking away before greeting Christian with a small hug, "Always."
"Right," Christian laughs, before he daps up Cody. "How's it going?"
"Well, she started us with tequila," He comments, handing us the two shot glasses.
"My girl," I state, taking the shot quickly.
We get settled in at the bar and order our first round of drinks before Carly kicks things off, "So how's it feel being the only one here not currently holding a championship title?"
Christian almost snorts as Cody shakes his head with a laugh, "I've still got one, that's nothing to scoff at."
"Cute," Carly comments, taking a sip of her fresh drink, "We've got five."
Christian~
"Am I getting anywhere with her?" Cody asks as we watch Carly and JJ dancing together from the bar. "I can't get any sort of read on her."
Chuckling, I nod, "Hey, I warned you."
"You did," He confirms with a laugh.
"She's definitely into you," I confirm for him. "She's just always going to be unapologetically Carly. Once you and her get some actual alone time, she'll be more open about it; double dating with JJ though was probably not your best move."
"I figured it'd be pretty low stakes."
Scoffing, I nod with a smile, "Or no stakes cause the two of them haven't seen each other in the last like six months."
"Are they usually like this?" He asks, gesturing to them, pulling my gaze back their way as they are laughing about god only knows what right now.
"Them?" I ask, chuckling, "Always. In-season, it's a little better because they're seeing each other pretty much 24/7, but when they're together in the off-season, it's almost always like this. Even more so when you add Maddy."
"And you put up with all three of them?" He asks, joking more than anything.
"I mean," I shrug, "It's only a couple of days usually, and I think it's hilarious seeing that side of JJ. I've known JJ longer than she's known them, so that maybe helps. After everything she's been through, it's nice knowing she's got two people down to be there for her through anything."
