The new directions were sat watching Puck's rendition of Van Halen's hot for teacher, all amazed at the fact that Puck had actually chosen to sing something for them, not even being asked. None more so than Katy, who was sat next to Rory, rocking out to her brother's performance she noticed how impressed Rory looked at Puck's badassness, his eyes wide in amazement as he watched the four boys perform the rock song. She laughed as Blaine and Mike did a choreography section with their microphone stands, thinking how impressive it was and that they'd have to teach her how to do it, as Mr Schue winced nervously. The few people left in the seats of the choir room cheered excitedly as the performance came to an end and Mr Schue jumped straight up to congratulate them. "Whoo! Wow! Puck! Guys! Spectacular!" Mr Schue exclaimed, making Katy wonder whether he was only going to talk in adjectives from now on, "what a way to start off the week! You guys didn't even need an assignment to work on this, you just did it!" "And that's pretty amazing coming from Puck!" Katy laughed, throwing her brother a teasing look. "Mr. Schuester, while the performance was excellent, particularly the drumming, don't you think that the subject matter is a little inappropriate?" Rachel piped up, looking proudly over at Finn, who was sat at the drums, throwing Puck a thumbs up for the performance. "Didn't you have a crush on Mr Schue?" Katy whispered, leaning forward to tease Rachel, who rolled her eyes, flushing red with embarrassment at the memory. "Well that depends on what Puck's intent was when he chose this song." Mr Schue said, turning to Puck for the answer. Puck found himself locking his gaze on something outside the choir room, before stammering his answer, "I guess I just dig Van Halen!" Mr Schue laughed, obliviously, but Katy knew Puck better than that and followed his gaze to find herself looking straight at Miss Corcoran. At first she thought nothing of it but when she remembered the song, her eyes widened, a very disturbing image popping into her head as she caught the eye of Finn Hudson, who she could tell was thinking the same.

The new directions were together in the choir room, brainstorming ideas for their mash-off with the troubletones. The group all had amazing ideas that they were eager to share as the classroom was filled with voices pitching their ideas out loud. "What about the clash?" Artie suggested, "Uh the police?" Blaine chipped in, unsure, "REM!" Mike shouted passionately, "Spice girls!" Contributed Kurt, "Jonas Brothers!" Rachel and Tina chorused, beaming. Adamant that her idea wouldn't get heard, despite how passionate she was about it, Katy decided to stand on top of her chair, throwing her hands in the air, screaming "ABBA!" as loudly as she could, drawing all attention to herself. "No. We can't use any of those bands! The only thing they have in common is that they all broke up, and right now, the new directions need to feel United." Finn insisted, making his way to the front. "I like what you're saying Finn." Mr Schue smiled, "it's not just about the music, it's about where it comes from." "Who do you think we should use?" Tina asked, smiling at Finn. "How about this? People think Hall and Oates are famous for their cool puffy hair and that dude's banging 'stache." Finn brainstormed, "Awesome 'stache!" Katy repeated quietly to herself, getting a faint laugh from Rory. "But also they're awesome for staying together for the long haul." Finn explained. "Just like us, despite our differences." Katy smiled, agreeing with Finn that it was a good idea. "I think we should give the solo to the new guy, get him prepared for what's in store, Rory I think you'll do a great job." Finn grinned at Rory, who looked shocked at the opportunity, "Thanks, Finn, but I don't think I'm ready for that honor just yet." Rory denied the offer, shyly, "Come on! You're totally ready Rory! You'll kill it!" Blaine beamed at Rory, trying to lift his confidence, "We'll all help you." Katy added, softly. "I think it's a great idea Finn." Blaine gave Finn an approving thumbs up.
