Brittany and Katy were sat together in Coach Sylvester's office, waiting for their cheer coach to come and potentially verbally murder them. Brittany was staring into space, dreamily, smiling to herself and Katy was sat, jumping her leg up and down, making a will in her thoughts.
Coach Sylvester sighed as she sat down, not surprising either girls as they both sensed her disappointment when she called their performance of 'hold it against me' a load of garbage wrapped in skin.
"Brittany, Im afraid it's time for a bit of tough love." Coach Sylvester announced, addressing the dreamy blonde first as she dug into her desk, pulling out a test paper, "I hold in my hand the latest algebra test of one Becky Jackson. Our plucky little Ewok waddled her way to a respectable C plus. Now your performance in the very same exam unearthed the hitherto undiscovered grade of F minus." Sue told her, showing Katy the tests, one written in multi colored crayons, signed Brittany, "you answered every question with 'see other side' where you composed an elaborate crayon-scape titled 'happyville' the town where math was never invented."
Brittany gazed at her own work, her little face beaming with pride, making Katy smile slightly and exchange a look with Coach Sylvester.
Feeling the need to elaborate on her design, Brittany quickly leaned in, pulling Katy in so she could get a better look too. "yeah, that's me and Santana and that's Kurt and Rachel in heaven and there's you Coach Sylvester. Oh! And there's Katy and Sam with all their adopted children and fish." Brittany turned to Katy proudly, seeking her approval and Sue realized that she wasn't going to get through to Brittany unless she was pretty blunt.
"Brittany, you're a terrible role model for the Cheerios! Last year I was caught in a haze of pregnancy hormones and i allowed your record breaking GPA to slide, the Cheerios grade point average has dropped three whole points. And that's after Katy joined, bringing it up a bit. My girls no longer see academic achievement as a worthy goal and I caught one of them trying to marry a squirrel." She explained, sharing another look with Katy, who raised her eyebrows in judgmental confusion.
"What?" She scoffed.
"That's because I believe in marriage equality for all land mammals." Brittany insisted innocently, snapping the last straw needed for Sue to break her news.
"Brittany you're off the Cheerios." Coach Sylvester declared.
Brittany's face immediately dropped, sadness washing over her expression and Katy widened her eyes, in shock and protest.
"No, you can't do that to her! I'll tutor her, I tutor Sam, I could tutor Britt as well!" Katy protested desperately, rubbing Brittany's knee comfortingly.
"It's not that simple Little Elmo." Sue shrugged, turning to Brittany again, "you have to loose the high pony. I'm giving the top spot to Katy, that's why you're here."
Seeing Brittany's face fall further at the loss of her position, Katy shook her head at the offer.
"Sorry Coach I can't do that, not to Britt." She said,
"No it's okay Katy. I'd rather you have the spot that anyone else." Brittany told her, clearly broken hearted, getting up and slowly swapping out of the room.
Katy turned on her chair, sympathetically, sighing as Brittany left.
"Why me coach? Why not Kitty? Or someone like her?" Katy asked confused.
"Well because you're the best person for the job. You're fiercely loyal, shown just then, you're a good role model and will hopefully put my girls back on the right path." Sue explained.
"I'll help Britt get back onto the Cheerios, she loves this club and when she does, she can have her spot back." Katy said, making a mental plan.
Sue chuckled slightly, leaning back in her chair, "you're pretty admirable Katy, you could be the most popular girl in this school but you'd rather your friend be happy. I think you're gonna be an excellent captain of the Cheerios, stop worrying, be proud of yourself."
"Okay. Head Cheerio, that's me." Katy muttered to herself, still trying to process the information.
"You still don't think you deserve this do you?" Sue said, as if she was reading Katy's mind. Katy shook her head in response, "you do. And there are plenty of people who think so too, including Quinn Fabray, when i was unsure of Brittany's ability to lead our Cheerios, I gave my top Cheerio a call and you were the first person she recommended, okay?"
Katy nodded, beaming at her coach, sitting up slightly straighter in her chair.
"Now get out the hell out of my office, loosen up a bit," Coach Sylvester smiled, shooing Katy out of the door.
"Thanks coach!" Katy called out, flashing her coach a large smile as she skipped out of the door.
Coach Sylvester watched her skip down the hall, hugging her binder to her chest, smiling at her new head Cheerio, her soft spot for the girl growing.
