FORKS WASHINGTON, 2005
Hero Kelly smiled despite herself as she breathed in deeply, inhaling all the flavours of the wind- she could feel the fresh life flowing through it where she stood in the thick of the forest and it seemed to fuel her so marvellously. For the first time since moving to Forks- she was on the hunt, but not in the way one would assume, she was searching for her brother. Simon had gone hunting and now that her exploration of the town was over, she had come to join him.
The red-headed girl's powerful legs allowed her to easily leap across anything in her path as she raced through the forest at an impossible speed, dodging trees and boulders as she travelled easily. There was something so pleasantly thrilling about racing through the seemingly endless ocean of green, feeling the wind gush and kiss her as she did so, toying easily with her curls, spiralling through each strand to flutter the curls in the air. She was like a red comet, striking through the green galaxy and the sun in the sky appreciated her on that day, striking down a warm haze that had been so painfully absent in their previous days in the dreary town.
"Simon?" she called somewhat pointlessly, attempting to catch at least a semblance of his trail- Looking for anything that might possibly bring her to him faster. Forks could not possibly be big enough to keep them apart for long. Hero owed everything to Simon, without him- she didn't know what she could possibly have done. She did not necessarily have a mother, in the true definition of it, her mother was dead and had been since the day after Hero was born and silently, she would always harbour a slice of guilt for that. Hero was just a child, she did not mean to cause her mother's demise, nor could she help it- but she could guilt over it, if not for Hero's birth, Poppy Kelly would have lived on and maybe that would have saved Simon from the fate he was given.
Simon had been Hero's best friend from the start even before she had ever opened her eyes for the very first time. She had been brought into the world, already having someone who vowed to protect her. And Simon had been there every single time she had been bullied by the local kids, every time their evil father had struck her for using her powers, every time the idiots in the asylum had electrocuted her-- And even the times when they had done worse than that...
Hero smiled into the wind as she slowed her run to a walk, deciding to hunt alone because clearly her brother had quite simply fallen off of the face of the planet and that was why she could not find him. It had been a long road, a long, hard life but they had done it together, completed every obstacle in their path together and that would always count for something, even without their sibling bond. Hero and Simon were not like normal siblings, they could not grow bored with one another or irritated- they were best friends.
When Hero had first been forced into the asylum, aged only fourteen- a large amount of money paid on her father's behalf just to get her away from him- she had been terrified, there was no other word to explain how she felt, there was nothing but pure fear. Simon and Hero were not crazy- but they had been put with dozens of people who potentially were. There were men and women, and even some children like Hero herself but one thing they all had in common was their misery and that was one thing the doctors didn't help with.
Somehow, Simon had turned her five years in the institute into something better- he gave her a reason to survive even when it seemed that they would be there forever and that made him the most important person in her life.
The water that graced Hero's ears was so calm on that uncommonly beautiful day and it put a skip in her step because with each tree she passed and each boulder she hopped over- she felt painfully closer to what she was looking for, and she had the optimism that that feeling meant Mary Alice- Or Alice as she went by now, was near- though Mary Alice was the clairvoyant, not her.
The Kelly siblings had spent their immortal lives travelling- in the human way, seeing as though they had eternity though they never felt unsettled, they never felt homesick for a house they did not have because they had one another and that was all they thought they needed- And they had devoted their time to finding her, they needed to know that she was okay and that she was happy because on that stormy night in 1920 when Simon and Alice had escaped the asylum together- with vampire aid- he had left her. Simon had left Mary Alice to go back for Hero and it was because of that that Mary Alice would have felt alone all these years. She didn't know that once, she had had a family and they were certain of that.
Slowly, the electrocution therapy started to degrade their memories but the Kelly siblings had one another as reminders and they attempted to help Mary Alice as much as they possibly could- so she would never forget what put her there. They knew she forgot because if she had remembered- she never would have left them behind. Simon and Mary Alice were in transition when he left her alone in the night, even through his pain he could not afford to leave Hero in that place because he had a genuine concern that if he left her there until he had turned- he wouldn't remember to turn back and save her.
When he finally reached the asylum in the night once more, he was newly turned, a newborn and he tore through the human doctors like a starved man at a buffet to save his sister- that was the first and last time Simon had drank human blood and it was that night that Hero had turned. He didn't know how he knew to turn her, or how he had the strength to do so on his very first night as a vampire, but he had done it and it was the best decision of his life.
Authors note: more flashbacks to come.
