FORKS WASHINGTON, 2005
Hero couldn't contain the laughter that bubbled from her lips as she hip bumped Carlisle away from the stove where he was absolutely butchering their attempt at cooking- she couldn't exactly say she blamed him, he having not cooked in three hundred years but even she, who hadn't cooked in almost a hundred, knew how to at least turn on an oven. It was the very first thing Hero had found that she was better than Carlisle at and she had a grin of pride on her face that made him glare teasingly as he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind.
The other members of the family were not entirely oblivious to the newfound spark in Hero and Carlisle's relationship- it was apparent to see that the night of the masquerade ball in Port Angeles had been the thing that made all the difference, a major milestone had been reached and everyone was happy for them- Including Simon, who purposely glared in distaste just to remind Carlisle that Hero had an older brother who would protect her to the death. Truly though, he wanted her to be happy. Today was the day that another change was destined to occur and there was an obvious tension building in the unused kitchen- today was the day they finally got to meet Bella Swan.
"Be nice" Esme warned as she easily grated cheese, directing her attention almost entirely to Rosalie who just sighed, rolling her eyes in a gesture that clearly indicated she was going to be anything but nice. Rosalie was the one who had the biggest aversion to Bella but deep down, Hero knew that that wasn't out of petty hate and spite- it was because she truly cared about her family and did not want to see them get hurt. Simon lounged quite uselessly against one of the countertops as he watched the others bustle about though the sound of a car was evidence enough that the time had come.
"Is the elevator music really necessary?" Simon clipped, gesturing vaguely in the air, regarding the opera that flowed through the speakers and Hero scoffed at him.
"We're cooking Italian" Emmett stated in a tone that suggested he was obviously answering the question.
"What has that got to do with anything?" Simon frowned, raising an eyebrow and Emmett blinked as though seriously considering the question before shrugging and going back to his cutting while Rosalie scoffed at him.
"Is she even Italian?" Rosalie sighed, doing nothing except holding a bowl and making it out as though it was the hardest job in the world- Hero couldn't help but laugh at her before her eyes dropped to where Carlisle was positively drowning some chicken in the pan with olive oil- he had a look of pure concentration on his face that she found completely and utterly adorable. It made her smile despite the entire situation and she truly hoped that they didn't give their new friend food poisoning.
"Her name is Bella" Emmett answered Rosalie. Simon and Hero exchanged a glance and swallowed to contain their laughter, poor Emmett was rather dipsy sometimes but they completely loved that about him.
"I am sure she'll love it no matter what" Carlisle soothed and Hero gently pulled the olive oil from his fingers, making him frown though that faded away when she shot him a wink and leant into his side calmly.
"Oooh, get a whiff of that" Rosalie hummed. "Here comes the human" and they all couldn't help but grin at each other in anticipation. Hero's eyes were intent when Edward rounded the corner and he instantly looked uncomfortable at the sight before him as his new girlfriend stood beside him. She was short, but somehow still taller than Alice and Hero- Bella was almost as pale as Edward, her hair a dark brown, eyes a warm chocolate colour and she looked visibly uncomfortable, imploring Hero to look up at Carlisle instead as Esme barrelled forward excitably- Simon smirking where he resided as he watched her.
"Bella! We are making Italiano for you" Esme gushed and Hero poked the chicken in the frying pan with a spatula timidly, making Carlisle chuckle as he took it back from her again and shovelled it much more aggressively, seeming rather professional as he did so.
"Bella, this is Esme; our mother for all intents and purposes. Her partner- Simon" Edward gestured around. "And Simon's sister, Carlisle's partner Hero" the red-headed girl waved with a warm grin that seemed to calm Bella somewhat- there was something so warm and inviting about Hero that the other cold vampires lacked... It was the power of life that flowed in her, only Bella did not know that yet.
"It's- uh- Nice to meet you all" Bella nodded with the most uncomfortable smile while Rosalie watched her with disgusted eyes.
"You've given us an excuse to use the kitchen for the first time" Carlisle chuckled as Hero stepped back to lean beside her brother, abandoning the food that they were all slowly ruining.
"How many vampires does it take to fry some chicken?" Simon posed like a terrible joke and Bella laughed nervously.
"I hope you're hungry" Esme smiled and Bella nodded uncomfortably.
"Yes, absolutely"
"She already ate" Edward countered, imploring Bella to glare at him for embarrassing her in front of his family who had put so much work in to accommodate for her. That, however, was the least of Bella's worries when the bowl in Rosalie's hands shattered into a thousand twinkling pieces, dancing around her shoes as everyone in the room exchanged varying expressions of discontented exasperation.
