FORKS WASHINGTON, 2005
Hero hopped easily over a fallen log, slightly fascinated by the layer of spongey moss that had slid across it like a winter coat, indicating the length of time it had been nestled there on the ground among the dried fallen leaves. She was perfectly calm- but in the next second, that was broken by the sound of running that had her instantly on edge because it was unmistakably vampire but also very evidently not Simon. She would know her brothers approach any day and this was someone else.
The girl straightened where she stood, the sun beaming down on her and easily turning her skin into a mirage of a thousand diamonds- it was the skin of a killer but she loved it and she had loved it since the very first time she'd ever experienced it, all those years ago- even though it was the reason why they had to hide in the shadows, the reason they left Mississippi behind. She did not need to chase this runner because they were coming directly to her and she was prepared for any variation of circumstance- at least, she thought she had been.
The next second, the vampire broke through the tree line and her eyes were forced upwards to see his face where he paused, similarly staring at her intently. This man was the largest vampire she had ever met, his shoulder impossibly wide, arms thicker than her thighs. His skin was a deathly pale, just like her own and as he stepped forward into a bar of light, it grew to shimmer just as she did. His hair was dark and curled atop his head though what truly caught her attention was his eyes. This man was the first person, aside from Simon, she had ever met with eyes the same as hers. And they were vibrant, fresh from a hunt just as she was.
"Well, Hi" he finally smirked and a grin split across his cheeks that made him a whole lot less deadly- he went from grizzly bear to Paddington bear in an instant and her guard easily dropped as she allowed a warm smile to fall across her pale features. "I was expecting a duel with some random murdering nomad, I must admit." He chuckled.
"No random murdering nomads here unfortunately." She smiled brightly, allowing a small giggle to slip through as she heard his laughter. "I'm Hero Kelly" she introduced, holding a hand up for him to shake and he seemed amused to do so, she interacted with him in such a controlled manner that he knew instantly that she was an older vampire. And she was controlled, calm and welcoming, there was nothing rogue or nomadic about 'Hero Kelly'.
"Hi, Emmett Cullen. Nice to meet you" he winked, though it was nothing more than a friendly gesture as his large hand shook her small one. There was something oddly warm about Hero's skin against his, something that confused him because he'd never met a vampire with varying skin temperature. It was oddly welcoming, refreshing even.
"It's nice to meet you too." She smiled though was frowning now, in consideration. "I'm sorry... Did you say your name was Emmett Cullen?"
"Oh, so you've heard of me." He grinned and she laughed, shaking her head gently. It was clear that this 'Emmett' was a kind soul and she knew that even if he could not provide Hero with the answers she required, he would still certainly make a brilliant friend.
"I have heard of your surname. Do you happen to know a Mary Alice Brandon? Or... An Alice Cullen?" She tweaked and he rose an eyebrow, bemused by the question though nodding along with his permanent welcoming smile, dimples denting cheeks.
"Yeah, I do actually. Alice is my sister... Whose Mary Alice, is that her real name?" He frowned, seeming just as confused as Hero suddenly was- did Alices amnesia go so far as to wipe her own name from her memory? It seemed drastic but possible.
"Yes, that is who I am looking for." There was a sudden warm hope in Hero's heart as she nodded brightly. She was close now, closer than she had ever been before as she faced off with the man that claimed to be Alices new brother. It left more unanswered questions to Hero than it did answers but her heart brightened at the knowledge that Alice had constructed herself a new family- it was something they had both wanted for her.
"Well, I can take you to her if you'd like? Our house isn't far from here and with your eyes, I'm sure you can be trusted" he chuckled throatily. It was the first time Emmett had seen another vampire - beside the Denali's- who shared their unique diet and- perhaps deceptively- it encouraged him to trust her. She seemed completely harmless and if not, they could certainly take down one frail she'd vampire lady. "Oh Rose, you found another one." He perked suddenly, catching Hero off guard as her eyes scanned the area and she sighed in relief as Simon stepped easily over a log beside a beautiful blonde lady. When Simon looked up at her- she knew that he had come to the same conclusion as they had.
"Emmett, this is Simon Kelly." Rose introduced though all the while, her eyes stared at the red headed woman- This new female was one of the most beautiful people Rose had ever seen, that was obvious from first glance.
"And this is Hero Kelly" Emmett returned. "Hero, this is my wife, Rosalie. Simon, I'm Emmett, pleasure to meet you" he babbled and the four of them exchanged glances at the peculiarity of the situation before laughing together. "Right, lets go find Alice"
