FORKS WASHINGTON, 2005

The red-headed girl breathed calmly as a brush dusted across her eyelids, a brush clasped in the excitable hands of Alice Cullen. It was a situation Hero had never expected to be in but now that she was, there was nothing better than having her sister help her get ready for the fundraiser ball. She was unreasonably nervous to be venturing out into the public eye with Carlisle- to be going on their first official date together. It felt incomprehensible, incredible. Softly, Rosalie tangled with her curls elegantly and she trusted the two vampires one hundred per cent- they would not let her go looking anything but her absolute best- she knew that for a fact.

"Just remember, don't step on his toes when you're dancing" Alice giggled, brushing makeup gently onto Hero's cheeks- it wasn't exactly as if vampires needed makeup to look beautiful, but they liked to highlight what immortality had already perfected. "Aww, you look so beautiful, Hero. It's a masquerade ball, how cute is that?! You and Carlisle's first date is to a ball!"

"Calm down Alice, you're more excited about this that Hero is" Rosalie giggled as the girl between them finally opened her eyes and took in her reflected in the mirror for the very first time. She had to admit that they had done a marvellous job, she couldn't help but grin up at them through the reflection and they gushed like two grandparents meeting their granddaughter for the very first time. It made Hero feel beautiful.

"Now for the dress" Alice clapped excitably, you and Carlisle are going in all black- I insisted. Both of you have really vibrant hair and I didn't want to make you clash...ugh" the pixie vampire visibly cringed at the thought, making the other two laugh gently.

"Great, we can look like Gomez and Morticia Addams instead." Hero joked as she pulled herself to stand, eyes scanning over the dress bag that Alice had hung on the mirror- the dark-haired vampire was making a very big deal out of this event, turning a simple ball into something that felt as important as a wedding. But Alice's floundering distracted Hero.

"Who?" Rosalie frowned and the red-head looked at her for a long moment before just shaking her head with a little laugh.

"Nevermind. You all need to expand your movie collection"

"Whatever, we don't have time for idle chitchat, we have a cinderella who needs getting ready for her ball!" Alice returned and Hero smiled.

"Oh, so you know that one?"

"Anyway" Alice implored again, "here we go and she unzipped the dress bag in one singular flourish, revealing the dress to Hero for the first time and the girl was no disappointed. It was, of course, black, long-sleeved and backless though with a high neck that gave it a semblance of modesty despite how impossibly tight it seemed even before she had it on her body. Of course, Alice had decided to focus on the 'sexy' side of her body.

"It's stunning, you're going to look beautiful" Rosalie encouraged and Hero hummed but otherwise allowed them to pull it from the hanger. Hero had no issues removing her silky kimono in front of Rosalie and Alice to reveal her underwear, they were her sisters, even if she hadn't really known them for very long. Alice helped her step in easily, pulling it up over her body and Hero was relatively unsurprised to find that it fit her like a glove, skin-tight but perfect. Her original concerns about the dress went out the window when she saw the full picture.

"Ooh, shoes" Alice reminded and helped Hero step into her heels- it was a good thing Hero was a vampire, otherwise she wouldn't possibly be able to walk in shoes so high. And the next thing to be added was silver jewellery- she felt stunning, classy as she stood there- Rosalie still being taller than her despite the heels. The only colour she wore was the red lipstick and her vibrant hair but Alice was right, it worked.

"Mask" Rosalie reminded and Hero held the beautiful ornate black lace mask to her face as Rosalie tied the ribbon in a bow at the back of her head. Luckily, vampires didn't sweat so as she stood there, she felt perfectly comfortable. "Sexy" Rosalie winked, having Alice giggling.

"Right, time to go, I can hear everyone downstairs" Alice clipped, the laughter gone as she proceeded to shoo Hero from the room, only causing laughter from the vampire though she felt her nerves hit her at full force as her dangling silver easings bounced gently against her neck. The hospital fundraising ball was for children in need- a cause that Hero herself believed in passionately, and there were going to be hundreds of people there, from all over Forks and Port Angeles - all the top jobs having been invited... She was understandably nervous.

When Hero got to the top of the stairs, she had to grip the handrail tightly in fear that she was going to fall right to her death if she didn't- a very irrational fear on the vampire's behalf. Her nervousness wasn't at all soothed as she descended the stairs and found that the room was full to the brim with Cullen coven members. Emmett wolf whistled when she reached the bottom- making her roll her eyes and Jasper held a hand up gently to guide her down the last few steps- encouraging her to smile.

But the next moment, none of that mattered because her eyes fell on Carlisle Cullen, he looked devilishly handsome where he stood in his black three-piece suit, bow tie a deep red that had her smiling. The second his eyes met her from beyond his simple mask, his eyes lit up and she grinned shyly at the reaction she had received.

"You look beautiful" he breathed, taking her hand gently and tugging her to his side softly so that they could lock arms sweetly- and Alice, who had just appeared, could take a photograph.

"You two crazy kids have fun" Emmett winked and Simon glared.

"But not too much fun."
