FORKS WASHINGTON, 2005

Hero Kelly's expression was calm as she stood in the empty bedroom in the Cullen residency- it was the room that Alice had 'given' her, and she was allowed to decorate it however she pleased. The entire thing felt so utterly peculiar to her, being able to stay in one place, with a complete family- but at the same time, it was exhilarating, the warm feeling of home that was present even after only two weeks. The door opening alerted her attention and she smiled as she looked over her shoulder at Jasper, the grin inviting him to stand beside her at the large window, looking out over the hammering rain against the wallpapering of emerald green trees.

"Alice always wondered about her past. She always wanted to know, even though she knew that whatever it was- there was a reason why she didn't remember. Alice felt like she didn't have an identity because she didn't know where she had come from and it was heartbreaking to see." he mused, eyes staring outwards as he spoke, not meeting the gaze of the person beside her. "Secretly, I think she just wanted to know that she had a family- people who cared about her. And now here you are and I know that even though she doesn't remember you, she feels like her family is complete"

"The worst thing for Simon and I was considering that she was alone, that she was out there somewhere thinking that nobody cared because she woke up in this world alone, as a creature she didn't know anything about. We had to find her, at least to check that she was okay, that she had people. We never really expected to stay any longer" she breathed, smiling tightly. "I am so glad that she found you, your family is everything we always wanted for her."

"We are your family now too, Hero. Everyone mutually agrees that you and Simon are meant to be here, with us. I know that you feel like an outcast but you won't always... I have felt like that before. When I first came here, everyone seemed to find it so... easy." he frowned. "To be a vegetarian vampire, to stay in one place all the time. It took me a long time to adjust but Alice made it easier, she made it worth and I do it every day for her. I know that you have a lot of conflicting emotions about Carlisle, Hero but shutting him out like this isn't going to help. It has been two weeks since you've spoken to him, he feels like he has ruined everything before it's even started. I'm not telling you to profess undying love for him, I am just advising that you talk to him at some point, that you tell him how you feel. He might surprise you." Jasper nudged her gently in the shoulder and she smiled tightly.

Jasper reminded Hero very much of Simon and maybe that was why she found it so easy to speak to him, or it could be that he was with Alice- or that his mere presence felt like a warm, comforting blanket. Every day, she grew closer and closer to the Cullens but not Carlisle, he was the one she unconsciously pushed away despite every atom of her body wanting to be near to him.

"Stop thinking so much, Hero" a different voice chipped and she turned around as Edward entered with a tight smile on his face. "You're overthinking everything and it is just causing you more stress than is necessary," he remarked, noticing the smile Jasper sent them before the major vanished as quickly as he had appeared- leaving behind the new vampire and the mindreader. "I'm not saying that you have it easy with Carlisle, but all the stars have aligned for you."

"Alice told me about the new girl" Hero breathed calmly, inviting Edward to join her at the window and he did so, very easily. Hero and Edward hadn't even exchanged any words with one another but they felt like brother and sister already.

"Yes, Bella Swan... My own personal nightmare." he clicked his tongue and she laughed gently at him.

"She doesn't have to be a nightmare, Edward. Maybe you are thinking too much too." Hero advised. "Maybe we are in the same boat."

"I am sorry Hero, about everything that happened" he frowned gently as he considered it. "I did not mean to read your thoughts... It just happens sometimes, I can't turn it off. You left a large portion of your story out, you left out the part that makes it so difficult for you to be close with Carlisle. He can't help you unless you tell him, Hero. And trust me when I say that he wants to help you. I'm not saying that I understand how you feel about it all, I could never understand but I know that it plagues you even now and you don't deserve to feel that way."

"Edward, none of us have happy stories, isn't that what we've all mutually agreed? I am trying, I feel as though I should be over it by now, does that make any sense? Eighty-five years since our escape and sometimes when I am alone, I still feel like I'm there." she frowned, strangely feeling as though she could completely confide in the mind reader, he just knew what she was saying without her having to elaborate and she didn't want to say it out loud. He didn't make her.

"You are never going to be alone again, Hero... You have three more brothers now who aren't going to let anything bad happen to you ever again." Edward assured with a warm smile and it was exactly what she needed to hear. Acting on instinct alone- an instinct that shocked her- Hero threw her arms around Edward's waist in a furious intensity and he returned it warmly, confused by the almost human temperature of her- Hero felt alive.

"I hope you figure everything out with Bella, Edward."

"And I hope you figure everything out with Carlisle, Hero"
