PORT ANGELES WASHINGTON, 2005
Carlisle Cullen and Hero Kelly turned heads as they walked through the open doors of the room, they looked absolutely stunning and were completely and utterly unfazed by the many people who stared at them- or at least, that was what their exterior implied. Hero's fingers involuntarily curled into Carlisle's suit jacket where her hand looped through his elbow and he looked down at her smiling warmly, assuringly as his other hand reached up to rest over hers soothingly.
"Carlisle!" they had only made it a few paces into the room full of finely dressed people when they were called upon and the blond man painted a welcoming smile on his lips as his team of colleagues approached, imploring Hero to do the same- though she was more uncomfortably shy than him. Carlisle didn't leave her side for even a second, his fingers going so far as to slip through hers in reassurance where their hands rested entwined on his arm. She was comforted by it.
"Jackie, Kathy, Thomas, Phil... It is marvellous to see you all. Please, meet my partner- Hero Kelly" he gestured, drawing the attention to her and she smiled sweetly, aware of their wide eyes- she was glad that Carlisle had called her that, his partner because, what else were they to one another? Neither of them truly knew, but partner seemed fitting- girlfriend was a word that seemed wrong coming from Carlisle. Girlfriend didn't seem strong enough of a term to explain their peculiar bond.
"It is a pleasure to meet all of you" Hero smiled politely and they all exchanged a glance, one that had her incredibly nervous. Weirdly, it felt important to impress these people. But when they turned back to her, they grinned and the short lady at the front wearing the midnight blue dress pulled her into a hug, startling her though Hero accepted it warmly.
"It is good to meet you, Hero. Carlisle here is so serious all the time, we never get to hear about his personal life" she pouted. "I am Jackie." at the knowledge that Carlisle isolated himself at work, Hero's golden eyes turned to him and he just smiled in return, a hundred thoughts racing behind his eyes though he continued to hold her beside him, watching her fondly with so much love in his eyes- one may think they had been together for years, rather than weeks.
"We must steal you away" another voice clipped, sounding somewhat bitter and Hero looked up into the human eyes of the woman who must have been 'Kathy', she was young, pretty and currently glaring daggers at Hero for reasons the vampire did not know. "You must tell us all about yourself." Hero looked up at Carlisle who looked over at Kathy for a moment with contemplation on his face.
"Oooh, yes. You gentlemen go and get yourselves some drinks and we will keep Hero here company" Jackie chimed in excitement, looping her arm through Hero's other one and dragging her closer to her, making Hero giggle slightly.
"Will you be okay?" Carlisle whispered lowly, too low for anyone else to here and she smiled.
"Go and have fun, I will be fine" and she winked, which had him grinning before he allowed his friends to drag him away. When it was all said and done and Hero turned her attention back toward the other friends of Carlisle- she suddenly felt strangely uncomfortable with the intensity of their gaze.
"Let's all sit down, your feet must be dying in those shoes, Hero. I don't know how you do it, you're a natural" Jackie complimented, dragging her towards a table and it was at that moment that Hero finally noticed how nice of a person nurse Jackie was, she was warm and inviting and the vampire grinned as she was pushed to take a seat. Though, once Kathy's stoney expression was on her again- Hero was uncertain once more.
"So, Hero... Is that your real name?" Kathy questioned. "You see, we've never heard of you before and we just want the best for our Carlisle." she smiled brightly, addressing him as though they were incredibly close when in actual fact- Hero didn't suppose they truly were.
"It is my real name" she nodded.
"Why wouldn't it be her real name?" Jackie asked uncomfortably, chuckling nervously because it was clear that there was a hatred already forming between Hero and Kathy. And Hero knew why that was just from the way Kathy looked at her soulmate- Kathy was jealous and Hero couldn't exactly say that she blamed her- though what Kathy didn't know was that he and Hero had never even kissed before.
"Well you never know, Hero sounds like an escorts name if you ask me" Kathy suddenly smirked, causing Jackie to gasp in horror though Hero herself made absolutely no change in expression as she stared in distaste at the receptionist.
"Kathy!"
"What is it you do, Hero?" Kathy ignored Jackie completely.
"I quite frankly think that that is none of your business Kathy" Hero returned with a cool calm that infuriated the receptionist even further. The red-headed girl said the other woman's name with as much distaste as Kathy had said hers. "Perhaps there is a reason that Carlisle keeps his personal life private."
"He really didn't tell you did he?" Kathy gasped falsely from across the table, holding a hand to her chest in mock offence and surprise- all the while Jackie flapped like an adorable bird trying to calm the tension. "He and I have been on our fair share of dates, you see. And over the past few months, in all our many conversations- he has never said anything about a Hero Kelly" Kathy boasted though the vampire raised an eyebrow, seemingly unfazed- the man that Kathy had described... Seemed absolutely nothing like the compassionate doctor she knew and so she did not even bother to engage the subject. Though deep down, her stomach churned slightly.
