FORKS WASHINGTON, 2005

Hero Kelly was tense where she stood beside her family, the new and old as their matching golden eyes fell upon the three nomads, collectively they were calm on the outside as they scanned across the vampires, but inside they knew that they were in danger now. The warm atmosphere of the baseball game was long gone, seeming to be swallowed up the second they smelt a new scent on the horizon.

"I am Laurent" the man in the centre smiled, skin a beautifully dark as he stared intently at Carlisle. They seemed friendly enough though they all knew how quickly such a thing could change. "And this is Victoria... And James" and that was it, finally after so many years, they had a name for the man that had caused their transition, James. The man who had been so obsessed with Mary-Alice's blood that he had fought to the death for it... Alice just didn't know that yet.

"I'm Carlisle and this is my family" the doctor returned vaguely gesturing around him.

"Hello"

"I'm afraid your hunting activities have caused something of a mess for us." Carlisle returned and everyone except Hero was oblivious to the way Simon tensed slightly, eyes transfixed on a spot before him. He had seen this man before, this ghost, he'd seen him in human life, memories that slowly faded and multiple times in immortality. Cal, his skin a beautiful dark, his brown overalls clean as he watched the scene with folded arms, was the man that had turned Alice and Simon and he watched the nomads with a look of contemplation. After years of guiding Simon through vampirism- it had finally become the time to find peace. Cal, the vampire groundskeeper, would find that peace only when the blond tracker in front of him was nothing more than a pile of ash.

"Our apologies" Laurent returned, acting the leader though Simon already knew he couldn't possibly be. Someone as ruthless as James could not be led by any man or woman- he was the leader. "We didn't realise the territory had been claimed."

"Yes, well, we maintain a permanent residence nearby" Carlisle's voice did wonders to soothe Hero even now that they were in mortal danger.

"Really? Well, we won't be a problem anymore, we were just passing through" James' eyes found Simon, and he smirked in recognition before looking over at Alice who was oblivious to the reasoning as the Kelly brother glared.

"The humans were tracking us but we led them east" the woman finally spoke, her voice pleasant though there was something venomous about the way she narrowed her eyes dangerously. "You should be safe"

"Excellent"

"So, could you use three more players?... Come on, just one game" Laurent persisted and Simon looked ready to say something, and he would have if not for the way Hero tightened her grip around his forearm- they could not provoke an attack on these people, they couldn't put their new family in danger all for their own revenge.

"Sure" Carlisle smiled, looking back at the tense siblings with confusion on his face before he continued. "A few of us were leaving, you could take their place." he thought fast. "We'll bat first."

"I'm the one with the wicked curveball" the redhead smirked and Jasper and Emmett grinned together.

"Well, I think we can handle that." Jasper grinned and despite everything, the tension seemed to be slowly diminishing as smiles returned to faces... That was of course until the wind changed direction and there was a chorus of stiffening for everyone involved before feral crouches took the place of wicked challenging grins.

"You brought a snack" James grinned and husses spread through them as a whole. "A human?"

"The girl is with us" a voice growled out and Simon pressed forward, holding both Alice and Hero behind him protectively as the family as a whole forced Esme and Bella back.

"How very familiar," James smirked to all of their confusion while Simon proceeded to hiss in agitation, ready to rip his head right off if not for the way Alice's hand curled to grip the fabric of his shirt against his back in something of a warning.

"I think it best if you leave" Carlisle continued.

"I can see the game is over" Laurent attempted to soothe. "We'll go now... James" he pestered and slowly they began to retreat before suddenly whipping away. The second they were gone, Carlisle turned to Edward though the mind reader wasn't paying attention to his father as his eyes were set on Simon. The red-head man was glaring angrily into the forest, oblivious of his new brothers stare and so Edward's eyes found Hero's and her gaze softened as she nodded, answering his unasked question.

"That's him" Hero informed, shocking all of the Cullens into paying attention. "That's the tracker that was after Alice. The reason why Simon and Alice turned. James was the one that killed the man who changed us" she spoke in a hollow voice and Edward seemed to fil with even more horror as he finally heeded Carlisle's warning and turned to drag Bella away. Hero's warm eyes found Alice and the clairvoyant smiled tensely.

"Let's get home" Carlisle demanded to the group. "We have to get ready."

"He isn't going to stop until he gets her" Simon returned with a hollow voice and Esme wrapped her arms around his waist. Just as they had found peace, found their family, everything seemed to come crashing back down around them and Carlisle pulled his girlfriend into a quick hug before they all progressed away from the field. They had to get ready to fight...
