"Ok Madi, we are here, do you have Aden's birthday present?" I ask, unbuckling Madi from her car seat."Yes!" Madi says, listing up the raccoon she picked out.
"Great, let's go."
I lifted Madi out of her seat and put her on the sidewalk next to me in front of the giant house the address on the invite led us to. I took Madi's hand and we walked to the front door, and I knocked. The door opened seconds later, and Lincoln was smiling.
"Hi Clarke, hi Madi, party is in the backyard." Lincoln says.
"Thank you Lincoln." I say, and me and Madi follow Lincoln to the massive backyard. When we walk outside, Aden runs right up to Madi, and they hug and Madi gives him the raccoon. Then Aden takes Madi's hand and drags her away, and I just watch the whole interaction, smiling like the proud mother I am.
"They are the cutest." A voice from behind me says. I turn around and I see Lincoln, smiling at Aden and Madi who are now jumping in the bounce house together. The party is definitely not a cheap one, and neither is the house it's in. It's a very big property, much nicer then the house me and Madi live in, but for a single mother I'm very proud of what we have.
"They are the cutest." I agree, smiling at the pair.
"I can introduce you to some of the other parents if you want." Lincoln offered, and I looked around the backyard. The offer was nice, and I knew Lincoln was just trying to be friendly, but the truth is, I had absolutely no interest in talking to the other parents. The same thing happens every time. They always ask how it is being a young mom and a single parent, and I honestly just don't have the patience today.
"Hey I get it Clarke. They are the same way with Aden's mom." Lincoln says, a genuine smile on his face. I wonder what he means by that and I also wonder who Aden's mom is, but I decide now Is not the time for questions.
"Do you have any drinks?" I ask, trying to shift the conversation.
"Of course, there is an ice bucket with juice boxes over there because you know...children's party, I have to go check on the cake but please feel free to take whatever."
"Thank you Lincoln." I say, nodding my head.
"No problem Clarke."
Lincoln walks back into the house, and I make my way over to the juice box bucket. I take a box of Apple juice and then head to lean against the wall of the house, so I'm a good distance away from the other parents, but still close enough to keep and eye on Madi and make sure she's safe. I take a sip from my juice box, and then someone moves beside me. I turn my head to the right and see someone I never thought I'd see again.
"I think you are dying." The woman says, a smile spread across her face, and her green eyes piercing through me once again.
"Really?" I ask, staring right back into her eyes, as blue and green meet.
"No Clarke, you are supposed to say what. I was re-enacting our first words to each other." Lexa says, shaking her head disapprovingly.
"I believe those were our second words to each other." I correct her, talking another her sip from my juice box.
"So you remember huh?" Lexa asks, a small smirk on her face.
"I do. You said do you mind if I sit, and then I said not at all." I say, and I watch as Lexa's smile grows.
"I remember too, it's just I think that me saying I think you are dying is a much better story for how we met." Lexa says, shrugging her shoulders.
