I raced around my kitchen moving quickly to find the stuff I needed for the day. I poured myself a cup of water which I set on the kitchen table then ran to the fridge to grab Madi's lunch that I had packed in advance. I set everything down on the counter then realized my phone was gone.
I pulled open a drawer next to the dishwasher to look for my phone which I couldn't seem to find and then heard a knock on the door.
"Come in!" I yelled, not really having time to get the door as I continued to frantically search for my phone, quickly opening every cabinet and drawer in sight.
"It's locked Clarke!" Lincoln called from the other side.
"Dang it." I mumbled, moving to go get the door. I unlocked it and pulled it open. "Hi Lincoln, Aden, and Lexa. Madi is just finishing a picture she's drawing and I have to finish getting ready." I greeted the 3 at my door. I walked back to the kitchen to continue my search for my phone and Lincoln and Aden moved to sit at the counter.
"Where's Madi?" Lexa asked.
"Her room." I answered, as I moved to look in the freezer knowing I could have put it anywhere from past experiences. I'm not exactly the best when it comes to keeping track of my phone.
I watched as Lexa walked towards Madi's room and I paused my search and took another sip of my water feeling a little tired. That bullet wound it really slowing me down these days.
"What are you looking for Clarke?" Aden asked from his seat next to Lincoln on a bar stool in front of the kitchen counter.
"I lost my phone."
"Do you want me to call it? It will take 3 seconds." Lincoln offered.
"I have the ringer off so that won't work but thank you. Oh by the way Aden I have something for you."
I turned around and walked over to a stack of papers on the counter, searching through it to get the one I wanted. "Here you go." I smiled, handing Aden the picture of a dinosaur that Madi drew him.
"Woah Clarke you made this for me?" Aden asked, eyes widening.
"Madi made it."
"Madi?! It's so good!" Aden smiled, carefully examining every detail of the crayon drawing.
"Madi will be glad to hear you think that." I answered.
All of a sudden I heard what sounded like airplane sounds and Lexa came running into the kitchen with Madi in her arms, pretending she was flying through the air like an airplane. I can not even begin to explain how happy that image made me. Lexa and Madi playing together. I'm pretty sure I'm dying inside right now but in the best possible way. The way that makes your stomach do flips and your heart skip a beat. The way that makes you realize you love something or someone.
"Is everyone ready for school?" I asked the kids, earning excited nods from both Madi and Aden.
"Great." Lincoln smiled. "Let's go."
"Wait a second. You really don't have to do this Lincoln." I objected, feeling guilty for not being able to drop my own daughter off at preschool.
"Clarke you heard what doctor Jackson said. You are supposed to be relaxing which is why I'm here. You aren't lifting a finger today." Lexa stated in a tone that left no room for argument.
"Lexa it's just a small wound. I'm fine really."
"Madi, Aden, do you two think Clarke should get to relax today?" Lexa asked the kids.
"Yes." They both nodded.
"And what about you Lincoln?"
"Yeah." Lincoln nodded too.
