I woke up and felt my head drop slowly. I sleepily opened one eye and noticed Lexa was trying to stand up slowly, without waking me. I opened my other eye too and was about to speak but stopped myself when I saw Lexa moving towards Madi. She scooped her arms under Madi's passed out body and gently lifted her from the couch, carrying her to her and Aden's bedroom. After Lexa had disappeared down the hallway, I slowly stood up from the couch and decided to sneak behind her and watch.
Aden was already asleep on his bed and Lexa gently crept up to the other bed, setting Madi down gently and tucking her in under the covers. I watched as Lexa bent down next to the bed and gave Madi a soft kiss on the forehead.
"I love you Madi. Happy birthday." Lexa whispered, gently brushing some of Madi's hair out of her face. She then walked over to Aden's bed and gave him a kiss Goodnight as well. "I love you Aden. Sleep well."
I'm pretty sure my heart exploded in that moment. I really needed to see that. I never knew that Lexa being so sweet with the kids could make me so emotional but it really did the trick.
"I'm sorry I woke you." Lexa whispered, turning around to face me as I stood motionless in the door way. I jumped a little not expecting her to have noticed to me.
"I Uh- it's ok. Thanks for tucking her in."
"I love her." Lexa smiled, turning to face Madi again. "She's special."
"So is Aden. I really do love him too."
"What are we going to do Clarke? We can't separate the kids."
I knew this conversation would come up at some point but I'm still not ready for it. I think of Aden as my own son now and the thought of him leaving breaks my heart. "Lexa I can't lose him. I don't think Madi can either." I mumbled, my voice cracking as I struggled to imagine losing the kid.
"Let's talk about this somewhere else. Would you accompany me on a walk Clarke?" Lexa asked, giving me a small smile.
"Yeah that's a good idea." I nodded.
Lexa and I both left the kids room and left my house, walking outside into the cool night's air. There was something so peaceful walking down the streets of such a quiet neighborhood at such a quiet time of night.
We walked in silence for the first few minutes, our strides in sync and for the first time in months, our hearts as well. I felt a hand brush against my own and quickly realized it was Lexa's so I didn't hesitate before grabbing it and intertwining our fingers.
"I'm sorry." I whispered, feeling a huge pang of guilt in my chest. "I really didn't mean to hurt you Lex. I know that you were just trying to protect all of us and I was selfish to feel angry when you had such a good motive."
"No I'm sorry Clarke. I left you and the kids without even saying goodbye. I thought I was doing the right thing but I was also being selfish. I was taking on everything alone when I should've been with you facing our challenges together."
"I guess we both made some mistakes." I chuckled, giving Lexa a small smile.
"Yeah, don't worry though it's all in the past."
There were a few moments of silence before I spoke up again.
"What now Lex?"
"Well I love you and I love Madi, and I know Aden loves you and I also know that Aden loves Madi. I don't think either of us are willing to lose you and Madi. I know I've messed up...we all have but you and Madi aren't just another family anymore Clarke."
"I know what you mean Lex."
"Clarke I need you guys in my life. I won't lose you again. come with us."
