"How much longer till we can escape?" I groaned looking out onto the desolate wasteland we called home. Leighton Hills, Massachusetts to be exact. A small town about 60 miles outside of Boston. Born and raised and ready to get as far away as possible.

"Well, considering that we start our final year of purgatory tomorrow... a little under a year?" Amy answered with her usual scowl. "Not too bad."

"Oh please, purgatory? I call this place straight up Hell!" I yelled into the open area in front of us. She smiled and pulled me in for a close hug. I adjusted my location to a position in which I could accept her hug without falling off the side of her hood. We continued to stare out into the world. We've lived here our whole lives. We knew nothing was going to change.

"It's getting late, Cole. We should head back soon," she whispered in a slightly painful tone. I looked into her wide blue eyes and she stared back into my boring hazel eyes. I examined her for a bit. Her hair was in the usual up do, unkempt and a pretty hazelnut color. Her smile was very bright as usual. Somehow she always found a way to be positive.

"In a little bit. I like being here. It takes my mind off of things."

Leighton Hills was a beautiful place, but there was just nothing to do. The bad kids were always sneaking into the clubs and bars just outside of town with their fake IDs. I wasn't one of those kids. I was the kid with good grades and the potentially boring, normal life. Who also happened to be secretly gay. Yeah, so if you thought I was checking Amy out earlier, you would be wrong.

My gayness doesn't have to be a secret. It's best that way though. Ever since I was young I was teased for acting different. Being more girly than most guys. I told everyone that I wasn't, so the bullying would stop. I tried to believe it myself but unfortunately I do like guys. I don't see any problem with that and neither does Amy. She is the only one that knows. I mean, really knows. Leighton still wasn't that most accepting place. With Massachusetts being the first place to legalize gay marriage it didn't make much sense, but that's just how it was here.

"I'm going to sit in the car. Come in when you're ready. But if you take too long, I will drive with you on the hood," Amy joked jumping off of the hood. I love her so much. What would I do without her? Probably kill myself.

I jumped off the hood and kept a sharp glance at the town below us. There was absolutely nothing for me here. It was boring and it never changed. My parents don't even accept me for the way I am. Being a music major was my choice. My father would beg to differ. He wants a football player or a mechanic. Something practical, by his standards. My mother is totally in denial about everything. The submissive trophy wife. Well, like a third place trophy. Her bruises are another story. Dad has kind of a drinking problem. By kind of, I mean that he drinks 75 percent of the time that he is awake. If they knew that I was, you know, different... I don't want to think about what would happen.

I opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat. Amy was in her rightful spot at the steering wheel being the only one with a car. Boston was a great car though. It was a baby blue 59 Chevy and it has definitely been through a lot. Since it was an old car it usually takes her some time to start it. Finally I heard the sound of engines flaring. She reversed the truck and we were eventually on the road. I rolled down my window to feel the cold breeze through my hair. My dark brown curls covering my eyes and blowing everywhere. My skin was much darker than Amy's. She was so pale that there was seriously no saving her. It wasn't like we got much sun around here. It was actually pretty cold most of the time. Now that summer was over and school was a day away, there would be a whole lot more "cold" to deal with.

"What's on your mind, sweetie?"

I looked over at Amy who had a faint focus on driving. She was a pretty decent driver; just not good with music. Last time we had the radio on we almost got into three car accidents. Music is amazing, but when we have it on in the car, it's not the best combination.
